Full-Time Contract Position (September 2014 – June 2015)
Royal Botanical Gardens is a 1,100 hectare biodiversity sanctuary that
includes gardens, wetlands, remnant prairie, Carolinian forest and
Niagara Escarpment lands. As Canada’s plant biodiversity hot spot, our
mission is to promote public understanding of the relationship between
the plant world, society and the
environment. Through our educational
programs and products, we seek to encourage environmental stewardship
by providing meaningful and diverse learning experiences that connect
people of all ages with the plant world. Our goal is to help people
understand the crucial role that plants play in sustaining and
enhancing our lives and the environment.
We are currently seeking one (1) dynamic interpreter (bilingual in
French and English) with a proven record of delivering and planning
captivating educational programming for people of all ages. We require
candidates with exceptional oral and written communication and
presentation skills who possess a sound knowledge and aptitude for
subject matter relevant to RBG’s mandate (horticulture, natural lands,
science and education). This position reports to the Manager, Customer
Programs, for all program development and delivery portions of the
position (4 days/week) and the Head of Education for French signage
and content development (1 day/week). This is a full-time contract
position running September 2014 through June 2015, with potential for
10-month renewing contracts (July & August off).
Key Responsibilities
• Deliver educational and interpretive program content to audiences of
all ages in an engaging and captivating manner in both English and
French
• Communicate with French schools and boards to market French language
school program instruction, and create and update contact lists
• Communicate with teachers/clients and the interpretive team to
coordinate program delivery
• Assist the Interpretation Officer with researching, writing, editing
and producing French interpretive signage and materials, and other
French Language Service projects
• Participate in updating and revising existing educational programs
and materials, and in the research and development of new programs and
materials
• Assist with the training of interpretive staff/interns/volunteers
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
• French bilingual ability at a level suitable for public
presentations, teaching, content generation and writing/editing
(prefer equivalent to Government of Canada level CCC or above)
• Familiarity with the natural history and identification of Ontario’s
flora and fauna a definite asset
• Preference for applicants with:
• Ontario Teachers College certification, or other formal
certification or training in education and/or
• Formal training in natural heritage interpretation, or outdoor and
environmental education and/or
• A diversity and depth of experience in the above fields or similar,
that may substitute for formal education
• University or college graduates in life or environmental sciences,
education, museum studies, horticulture or other related field an
asset
• Preference for applicants demonstrating 2+ years working with
children in educational/recreational programs
• Willingness and ability to comfortably teach scientific concepts
such as evolution, adaptation, conservation, ecology and geology
• Must have an outgoing, people-oriented personality and a
demonstrated commitment to excellence in visitor services
• Must be physically capable of walking distances in excess of 3-5km
daily over hilly terrain
• Must have reliable transportation to all RBG properties (programs
occur at all locations)
• A clear Police Records Check will be required of the successful
candidate(s), at their expense
• First Aid Certification
• Must be available to work holidays, weekends and evenings as
required with compensatory time off in lieu
