Re-branding Nigeria “Good People Great Nation…”

By Akpeli Othuke Andrew
Yesterday during our Company’s Board of Director’s meeting, one of our colleagues virtually overused the word “Rebranding our products and services” as if he was a one time student of Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Akunyili. This made me to wonder if rebranding was actually what we really needed; bearing in mind how the much publicized rebranding Nigeria ended up after Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Akunyili the former Minister for Information and Communications for reasons best known to her had to dumped the almighty and all-feared People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for All People’s Grant Alliance (APGA) to run for the senatorial seat in her senatorial district.
While pondering about what my colleague was saying, my mind drifted from our company’s issue to start thinking of what actually happened to the much publicized Re-branding Nigeria. Does it mean that Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Akunyili while handing over to the then Minister of States for Information and Communication, she was so much in a hurry that she could not include her highly-valued Re-branding Nigeria project in her hand over note? Does it mean that the new honourable minister do not find it important to pursue the project which was very dear to Dora? Or was the project only important for the former NAFDAC boss?
These are some of the questions running through mind little brain about the project which was launched at the wake of issues of cyber crimes, drug and human trafficking, money laundering, embezzlement, abuse of office and all forms of corruptions which had marred our national identity. So the idea of rebranding Nigeria could not be faulted based on the painful reality on ground. But after she left, the project left with her.
What has happened to the project? Or had Nigeria been re-branded to the level expected by the project?
