Organization Description:

Responsible for ensuring the successful preservation and restoration
of a unique 900+ acre site in one of the fastest growing urban areas
of the country, rare Charitable Research Reserve is an organization
situated in the Region of Waterloo of southwestern Ontario. Our
primary goal is to successfully conserve the natural area and improve
the ecological integrity of our landscapes. To do that, we need to be
a part of a community that values and connects with nature. Our
efforts to educate and provide hands-on opportunities to interact with
nature have resulted in our Chain of Learning. This initiative
connects our research, restoration and education activities in order
to ensure maximum sharing of ideas and knowledge between all involved
– from visiting school children to the wide array of leading
professionals on our advisory committees, including senior scientists
and some of the best minds in a wide range of disciplines.

Job Description:

We have an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a
variety of restoration based work including: trail and property
maintenance, in-stream and wetland restoration, tree and shrub
planting, invasive species management, mapping, and other duties as
assigned.

Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Leading and participating in restoration based activities with
school and corporate groups including invasive species management,
tree planting, in-stream/wetland restoration, shoreline cleanup, etc.
• Coordinating and communicating with a group of 10-15 volunteers to
ensure regular maintenance of trails, documenting of trail conditions
and completed tree work, and assessment of damage following storm
events
• Reporting on reserve security issues and addressing problem areas to
deter inappropriate use
• Assisting staff in support for fundraising including grant
applications and events
• Attending staff meetings and reporting on ongoing activities
• Some planning and report writing to develop action plans in
conjunction with the Land Management Department
• Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends to accommodate
restoration groups and public educational programming

Qualifications:

This job opportunity is subject to government funding approval. The
successful candidate must be available with an approximate start date
on July 6th, 2015 for a period of eight (8) weeks.

Government Funding Qualifications Require All Applicants To Be:
• Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
• Registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and
intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic
year
• Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee
protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee
Protection Act5
• Legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant
provincial/territorial legislation and regulations

This position is intended to provide valuable work related experience
to a returning to school student, and will be funded by a governmental
grant.

Required Qualifications
• Completing university degree or college undergraduate degree or
diploma in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Geography,
Forestry, or a related field
• Field work experience, comfortable with use of GPS
• Experience with native planting, invasive management, wetland
restoration or related experience
• Ability to work in all weather conditions
• Physically fit, able to lift heavy weights, carry equipment, and
mechanically inclined
• Some supervisory/training experience and a demonstrated ability for team work
• A solid understanding of the flora and fauna of Southern Ontario
would be an asset
• You must have a license and access to your own vehicle
