Characterizing
plant cell wall enzymes for potential use in biomass refining
KTH in
Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less
than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education
capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans
from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes architecture,
industrial management and urban planning. There are a total of just over 15,000
first and second level students and more than 1,600 doctoral students. KTH has
almost 4,300 employees.
The School
of Biotechnology at the Royal Institute of Technology offers a curriculum that
reflects the multidisciplinary nature of Biotechnology, integrating theoretical
and applied science in undergraduate and graduate courses. The school has nine
departments with about 220 employees, all located at AlbaNova University
Center. The biotechnology research within the school is internationally well
recognized.
A Postdoctoral
scholarship is available in the group of Dr. Henrik Aspeborg at the Div of
Glycoscience, School of Biotechnology, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH),
Stockholm, Sweden.
Description
The
project is to characterize plant glycoside hydrolases involved in cell wall
metabolism. Target genes will be cloned and the recombinant proteins will be
expressed using heterologous systems. Biochemical characterization of the
target enzymes will include substrate specificity and catalytic function.
Requirements
PhD in
biochemistry, biotechnology or molecular biology. A solid background in
molecular cloning, protein expression and enzymology is strongly favored.
Expertise in plant cell wall biosynthesis/modification/degradation is highly
desirable and experience in gene expression profiling and bioinformatics is a
plus. Applicants should be enthusiastic and highly motivated, able to work
independently and have excellent verbal and written communication skills in
English.
