The Centre for
Research in Educatio

n and Educational Technology, at the Open University has an
international reputation for the quality of its research.  Providing
research students with a supportive environment and excellent research
facilities ensures a future supply of first class researchers.  In
conjunction with the highly prestigious Globe Theatre and with the Open
University’s Department of English, CREET offers you a unique opportunity to study
from October 2016 for a three-year full-time PhD in Playing Shakespeare.

Every year Globe
Education’s flagship schools programme Playing
Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank
creates a high quality production of
a Shakespeare play specifically designed for young people. The project provides
free training for around 200 teachers and in-school workshops for around 3,000
students, backing this up with a range of digital resources. The aim of the
Playing Shakespeare Full-time Studentship will be to explore the impact of the
programme upon secondary school students.

The studentship will
be full time at the Milton Keynes campus and you will be expected to live
within easy travelling distance of Milton Keynes and London.  You will
need to attend the University regularly, to engage with the research
environment at the OU and with a range of activities organised by Shakespeare’s
Globe in relation to their research topic.  Your research may involve
attending Globe Theatre programmes and productions overseas.  Expenses
incurred in doing so will be reimbursed.

If you feel that the
challenge of research in this exciting area of arts education is for you and
you have the drive and intellectual curiosity to pursue postgraduate research,
then we look forward to hearing from you!

You will have a
postgraduate qualification at Masters level in arts, drama, education, language
studies, or another appropriate discipline.

The Open University
is one of the UK’s leading Research Institutions. In the 2014 REF 72% of its
research was rated as “world leading” or “internationally excellent”.

There is currently a
vibrant international community of students studying our PhD programmes.
The Open University provides excellent support for students and offers a full
range of training in computer, library and presentation skills.

for UK, EU, EEA and International students who currently hold a tier 4 visa to
study in the UK.  Full funding for PhD studentships will include fees and
maintenance (£14, 296 in 2016) for three years, depending on satisfactory
progress.
