Scholarship Description: Wave energy is one of the renewable energy sources with the greatest
potential for development; however, understanding its environmental impacts is
fundamental to its wide-scale adoption on a commercial basis. Combining the
expertise of Plymouth University and Pelamis Wave Power, one of the major
industry players in the sector, this PhD project will study the impacts of a
wave farm on coastal processes. A suite of numerical models – including wave,
hydrodynamics and sediment transport models – will be applied, complemented by
field data as appropriate. The successful candidate will be supervised by a
team of experienced academics from the Coastal, Ocean and Sediment Transport
(COAST) Research Group of Plymouth University and based at the offices of
Pelamis Wave Power (in Edinburgh) to benefit from daily interaction with their
staff and being able to match the project to the real-world regulatory
requirements of environmental impact assessment.
