The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens is an educational entomology center
in the mountains of Costa Rica. We have been educating people about
science and nature with an informal hands on approach for over 20
years. We are very dedicat

ed to providing a unique educational
experience to people of all ages.

We are seeking outgoing, motivated interns to share their passion of
nature with the public. Our interns act as tour guides, providing hour
long tours of butterfly enclosures and an insect collection. Their
role at the gardens is to ensure a positive learning experience for
our guests.

Job Responsibilities:
• Educational tours of the facility (1-4/day depending on the season)
• Work days 7:30 to 5pm
• Typical workweeks will be 6 days on, 1 day off
• Facility maintenance
• Insect and arachnid care
• Garden work
• Developing and potentially running programs for local kids aged 6-12

Requirements:
• You do not need prior knowledge of insects; we will train you with
all of the knowledge you need to do 1 hour tours through our gardens
and insect collection.
• Good communication skills
• An outgoing, flexible person with a positive attitude!
• A hard, self-motivated worker
• Someone committed to science education
• A passion for nature
• We teach science, and you must be comfortable talking to people
about evolution
• Basic physical fitness: you will be moving most of the day and we
are located in the mountains so there are many hills around town

Additional Assets:
• A second language: Spanish, French, German, Hebrew or Dutch
• Background in education and outreach
• Science background – biology or entomology

Internships last 2 months, the available positions for 2015 are as follows:
• February 15 – April 15
• March 1 – May 15
• April 10 – June 15
• May 15 – July 15
• June 10 – August 10

This is one of the last free volunteer opportunities on the planet. We
provide room and board, but you are responsible for your travel
expenses. A workweek is 6 days on and 1 day off. Monteverde is a
tourist destination for birding and wildlife watching making it a
great place to pick up birding, enjoy hiking and learn about other
wildlife in your spare time.
