The Medway Community Forest Cooperative (MCFC) is an exciting new
company with a mission to support local community through sustainable
and ecologically based forest management.
The MCFC has su
ccessfully secured a pilot project, in partnership with
the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, to establish the
Province’s first Community Forest. Through the project, MCFC has a
license agreement for the management of approximately 15,000 ha of
Crown land in Annapolis County.
In addition to managing lands under a Crown license agreement, the
MCFC will be developing programs and services to support private
woodlot owners in the sustainable management of their land.
The MCFC is building creative new models for forest-based business.
Success depends on cultivating a broad level of community
collaboration and an entrepreneurial approach to maximize economic,
social and environmental values associated with forest management. The
MCFC will actively promote new product development, start-up ventures,
and community investment.
Under the direction of the MCFC Board of Directors, the core
responsibilities of the Manager will include:
• Development and implementation of a community engagement program to
promote participation in management planning and invite MCFC
membership.
• Development and implementation of a Forest Management Plan for the
MCFC license area in consultation with First Nations, stakeholders and
the public.
• Administration and direct supervision of all MCFC activities
including contract tenders associated with pre-treatment assessments
and forest operations.
• Maintenance of FSC and SFI certification on the MCFC license area.
• Liaison with NSDNR and other partners and community organizations to
develop new business opportunities associated with timber and
non-timber forest products, as well as the diversification of forest
use.
• Development of collaborative programs to build capacity for good
forest management on private woodlots in the local area.
Candidates will be assessed based on their understanding, interest and
experience in the following:

forest, including First Nation rights and interests

• Communications, web, and social media
• Community forestry
• Community outreach and engagement
• Conservation planning
• Ecologically-based forest management
• Forest certification

• Rural communities in Nova Scotia
• Technical ability relating to GIS, GPS
The successful candidate must have a degree in forestry and either be
a Registered Professional Forester in Nova Scotia or eligible to
become registered within 6 months of accepting the position.
Base salary for the Manager position will be $51,500 per year with
additions negotiable based on experience and qualifications. The
successful candidate will be required to provide a vehicle suitable
for woods travel and will be compensated for use on MCFC business.
The position will be based in Caledonia, Queens County N.S. and will
start as soon as possible.
