Médecins du Monde Logistics Coordinator (M/F) Job Vacancy in Liberia

Liberia is standing at a crossroad after fourteen years of brutal civil war, costing 250,000 lives displacing almost half the population, devastating social and cultural life, and all but destroying the countries infrastructure and economy. A peace agreement was signed in Accra in August 2003, and leaded to the installation of an interim government dominated by the country’s three former armed factions and tasked with guiding Liberia towards elections in 2005. To support the peace process, the United Nations Mission in Liberia was created (UNMIL) in September 2003 and about 15,000 peacekeepers and 1,800 civilian police were deployed throughout the country. The elections took place peacefully in October 2005, and Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected. The new government of Liberia was inaugurated on 16 January 2006. Today, despite major progresses made, the government is not yet able to assume all its responsibility although urgent issues still need to be tackled.

Liberia’s health sector is transitioning from an emergency phase to a development phase. However, a large percentage of the population still has limited access to health and social welfare services. In 2007, 80% of the health facilities are running thanks to a support from INGOs. The overall goal of the health sector is to expand access to basic health care and one of its major concerns is to reduce the maternal mortality which ranks among the worst in the world.

Médecins du Monde (MDM) resumed operations in Liberia in August 2003. The general objective of the program is to support the government for the improvement of access to quality health services in 10 MoH facilities in the eastern Bong County and build the capacity of local health authorities (Bong County Health Team) to ensure future handover of activities.

• Primary Health Care: Implementation of the Basic Package of Health Services (including HIV/AIDS) in 10 MoH facilities. A specific focus is given to reproductive health with ensuring Household-to-Hospital continuum of care through strengthening of TBA networks, introducing EmoC and PMTCT services in PHC facilities, improving referral system and a construction of a City Obstetrical Hospital in Gbarnga

• Community Health : Health awareness activities for the population, strengthening of the Community Health System, contribution to the development of the national policy for community health, forecasted training for Community Health Volunteers and setting up of the supervision system

• Mental Health: Progressive handover of psychological and psychiatric consultations to the health authorities through a strategy of integration of the Mental Health activities into the Basic Package of Health Services in PHC facilities.

• Human Resources for Health: Theoretical and on-job training for MoH personnel in the facilities, contribution to the development of national training curricula for medical staff, support to the Phebe nursing school.
