Position Summary:
McGill University seeks a Sustainability Manager to lead the McGill
Office of Sustainability (MOOS). The Sustainability Manager will play
a major role in the development and implementation of strategic
efforts to build a culture of sustainability at the University and
establish McGill as one of No
rth America’s leaders of sustainability
in higher education. The MOOS is guided by the University’s
Sustainability Policy and Sustainability Strategy (Vision 2020), and
administers McGill’s $840,000 per year Sustainability Projects Fund.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Provide supervision and mentorship, on an ongoing basis, to staff
and student interns.
• Provide leadership in implementation of McGill’s Sustainability
Strategy and advancement of a collective vision and priority actions
for sustainability at McGill.
• Cultivate buy-in and support for sustainability as a priority at all
levels of the University, including among senior leadership.
• Guide, support, and advise both academic and non-academic units and
student groups in their development of sustainability initiatives.
• Serve as a spokesperson and partnership-builder on behalf of
sustainability at McGill—this involves internal and external
stakeholders, potential funders, and the media.
• Advance a broad concept of sustainability and promote the role that
McGill University can play in supporting a societal shift toward a
more sustainable future.
• Develop and manage budgets to maximize resources available to the MOOS.
• Work with McGill’s University Advancement (alumni and development)
staff to develop and implement fundraising strategy for sustainability
initiatives.
• Chair the Sustainability Projects Fund Working Group, which
determines the allocation of the Sustainability Projects Fund.
• Represent the MOOS at public events and in the media.
Minimum Education & Experience:
• Master’s degree
• Two (2) years’ related experience
OR
• Undergraduate degree
• Five (5) years’ related experience
Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities:
Required: Experience in developing, engaging and leading
cross-functional teams with demonstrated ability to engage and
motivate a broad range of stakeholders. Proven ability to achieve
strategic goals through partnerships, networks and collaborative work.
Proven knowledge of management processes including budgeting,
fundraising, developing a business case and the ability to navigate in
a decentralized and complex environment. Excellent analytical and
problem-solving skills, communication skills, and emotional
intelligence.
Assets: Post-graduate degree (master’s or PhD) is an asset.
Knowledge of and experience with (1) sustainability, (2) the
university working environment, (3) systems change and social
innovation, (4) equity and social justice; familiarity with the McGill
context, knowledge of public policy, and familiarity with provincial
and federal context.
English fluency is required. Strong French skills are a definite asset.
