Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) is seeking a motivated, practical and
organized individual for the position of Conservation Assistant to be
based out of Peterborough. Travel to properties in our region required
on a regular basis. The Assistant will report and provide direct
assistance and support to KLT’s Stewardship Coordinator. The
position’s wage is $11 per hour for 30 hours a week for a period of 8
weeks. Start date negotiable.
The Assistant will help KLT maintain and research rural properties and
enhance their ecological and cultural features. The conservation
assistant will:
• Arrange, equip and lead field visits, events and work activities
• Provide effective site and volunteer coordination to ensure that:
• Site activities are planned and managed safely and efficiently
• Transportation of volunteers and adequate equipment to the site is arranged
• Visitors are introduced to the properties and their natural and
cultural features
• Carry out identified property work activities, such as developing
and maintaining trails, planting and clearing vegetation, maintaining
signage and buildings, and control of invasive plants
• Maintain relevant information and equipment for the assigned property
• Assist senior staff to identify, map, research and achieve
conservation land opportunities in the Kawarthas, including strategic
land acquisition, planning and landowner agreements
• Research and compile land data to foster database development and analyses
Requirements and assets for the Conservation Assistant position include:
• A valid driver’s licence, daily access to use of an automobile, and
a boating licence
• Understanding of and experience with conservation programs
• Practical field and property maintenance skills and experience
• Willing and able to work outdoors and perform tasks involving manual labour
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Plant and animal field identification, inventory and research skills
• Self-starter who is organized and able to work independently.
• computer skills, including for databases and Geographical
Information Systems (GIS)
