Organization Description:
The Ignatius Jesuit Centre is a not for profit charity situated on 600
acres of woodlands, wetlands, trails and farmland just outside of
Guelph Ontario. Since 1913, Ignatius Farm has served as the well of
sustenance for the Jesuit community in the region. In the last 20
years, Ignatius Farm has evolved to become a model for organic
agriculture and the mentoring of organic growers. Located at the
northern perimeter of Guelph, Ontario we bridge the urban with rural,
and invite our surrounding community to visit and get involved with
their local farm.
• Ignatius Farm provides fresh, local, organic vegetables and fruits
to the broader community through our Community Shared Agriculture
program, a Farmers’ Market, restaurants, and special orders.
• Our 3 acres of Community Gardens and our active volunteer program
are very popular with those who appreciate working in healthy soil and
our beautiful surroundings.
• Ignatius Farm additionally rents land to various small farm businesses.
Job Description:
• Together with Farm team, produce top-notch organic vegetables.
Primary field team leader & mentor for farm interns and volunteers in
hand-tool/hand-scale horticultural operations.
• Coordinate and train staff in harvest & post-harvest handling –
quality control, wash station preparations & logistics, curing, cold &
warm storage, food safety
• Coordinate and train staff in CSA distribution (farm store and
off-site), farm produce sales (restaurants, retail, markets) &
donations – quality control, pricing, displays, consistent supply
• Trouble-shooter! Cross-check crop planting & harvest plans prior to
implementation
• Coordinate field records, field maps, harvest documentation and cost analysis
• Schedule team task rotation,s i.e. greenhouse, lunch prep, CSA pick-up,
market
• Maintain & repair field and harvest hand-tools
• Secondary operator for tractor-based field operations and
specialized equipment for vegetable production, community gardens,
cover crops, and preparing fields for lease
• Ensure interns follow Standard Operating Procedures & utilize
Pre-Use Inspection forms for equipment; Liaise with colleagues to
ensure a healthy & safe work environment
Hours per week: 40 / week with seasonal demands taken as lieu time
Qualifications:
• Experience and knowledge of organic vegetable production and marketing
• Team & community builder; leadership that nurtures leaders; Strong
written and verbal communication skills
• Experience operating tractors and implements
• Proficiency with Excel, Microsoft Office
• First Aid/CPR, Valid G class drivers licence
• Health and Safety experience
