Organization Description:
The Ignatius Jesuit Centre is a not for profit charity situated on 600
acres of woodlands, wetlands, trails and farmland just outside of
Guelph Ontario. Since 1913, Ignatius Farm has served as the well of
sustenance for the Jesuit community in the region. In the last 20
years, Ignatius Farm has evolved to become a model for organic
agriculture and the mentoring of organic growers. Located at the
northern perimeter of Guelph, Ontario we bridge the urban with rural,
and invite our surrounding community to visit and get involved with
their local farm.
• Ignatius Farm provides fresh, local, organic vegetables and fruits
to the broader community through our Community Shared Agriculture
program, a Farmers’ Market, restaurants, and special orders.
• Our 3 acres of Community Gardens and our active volunteer program
are very popular with those who appreciate working in healthy soil and
our beautiful surroundings.
• Ignatius Farm additionally rents land to various small farm businesses.
Job Description:
• Maintenance & Repairs for new and old tractors ranging from 18 Hp to
80 Hp, and wide range of field implements for field prep, planting,
transplanting, weeding and harvesting
• Maintenance of farm workshop tools and supplies, and field equipment
• Plan & oversee field operations – crop rotation, cover crops, soil
building, custom operators
• Oversee and primary operator for tractor-based field operations for
10 acres vegetables and associated cover crops, 3 acres community
garden and complementary cover crops, switchgrass plantings for mulch,
cover crops in unrented fields, preparing fields for lease
• Primary operator of specified equipment, e.g. Tuff-Bilt tractor
(direct seeding, weeding)
• Maintain/update Standard Operating Procedures & Pre-Use Inspection
forms; Liaise with Farm
• Manager to ensure a healthy & safe work environment
• Train and supervise staff and interns on all tractors and equipment
• Together with Farmer team, produce top-notch organic vegetables and
mentor farm interns
• Liaise with Farm Manager to ensure a healthy & safe work environment
Hours per week: 40 / week with seasonal demands taken as lieu time
Qualifications:
• Solid expertise operating tractors and implements
• Experience and knowledge of organic agriculture sufficient to mentor
farm interns
• Team & community builder; Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency with Excel, Microsoft Office
• First Aid/CPR, Valid G class drivers licence
• Health and Safety experience
• Tractor/machinery maintenance skills an asset
