Position Title – Program Manager
Application Deadline: July 25, 2014
About Fresh Roots
Fresh Roots transforms urban spaces into thriving gathering places through
urban agriculture. More than growing a garden, we grow community.
We collaborate with organizations like the Vancouver School Board to grow
schoolyard market gardens. All produce grown is distributed through our Good
Food Markets and featured at school cafeterias. We host classes, fieldtrips,
workshops, and summer programs for neig
hbours, students, and teachers to engage
first hand with their food and community. We are community-engaged farmers:
sharing our knowledge of food systems and helping people experience vegetables
growing first-hand. Our market gardens are neighbourhood food assets – a place
of connection for people across cultures and generations.
We’re looking for the right person to help us build sustainable urban food
systems. This position is fundamentally creative, where you will design, build,
and grow. You will see your dreams enacted. We are outside, engaging with
neighbors, stakeholders, and friends to connect our communities to their food,
their environment and one another. We hope that you join us.
The Job
Working directly with the Co-Directors, the Program Manager (PM) animates Fresh
Roots’ market gardens: providing educational, volunteer, and food celebration
opportunities for the school community.
The PM will manage Fresh Roots’ engagement strategy. You will dream, develop,
fund, and execute Fresh Roots’ strategy to activate the gardens. The PM will
strategically develop Fresh Roots programming, and then direct those programs;
ensure that funding is available; communicate the strategy to stakeholders;
improve the market garden’s educational infrastructure; and recruit and manage
other Fresh Roots team members towards the engagement strategy.
The Job Entails:
• Manage Fresh Roots’ existing programs
• Strategize, refine and assess programs for the coming year – answering the
question “How can Fresh Roots better provide educational, volunteer, and food
celebration opportunities for the school community?”
• With Co-Directors, finalize upcoming program plan
• With Co-Directors, finance programs through: fundraising, grants, and
fee-for-service opportunities; experience in writing grants/proposals is an
asset
• Develop and provide programming to teachers, students, and neighbours.
• Promote programs to teachers, community members, and corporate stakeholders
through various mediums such as social media and direct engagements
• Ongoing evaluation of programming
PM Must Have’s (the Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications)
• Three years experience or more in program development and execution
• Prior experience fundraising: donor cultivation, grant writing, events
• Knowledge, experience, and expertise in food systems; i.e. agriculture
• Highly motivated and energetic; able to handle an ambitious workload, with
attention to setting priorities and meeting deadlines
• Ability to think creatively and strategically
• Ability to understand financial aspects of planning annual program budget and
tracking program accounts
• Ability to cultivate and work with volunteers
• Prior experience working with youth
• Prior experience with communications: newsletter development, social media
strategy and execution, public presentations.
