is seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial Product Development manager
with leadership experience to contribute to our management team by driving the
design, improvement, and innovation in our proprietary web application and
backend database, FenixDB. The role will report to the East Africa Operations
Director and will work cross-functionally with our customer service,
product
development, operations, sales, marketing, and technical teams on the ground to
gather necessary business requirements and convey them in a clear and succinct
format to our software engineering team.
This position offers

startup operating in the East African social enterprise space. Candidates must
have a passion for entrepreneurship, renewable energy, and sustainable
development in frontier markets. As a Product Development Manager, you will be
based in Kampala, Uganda (with regular trips to the office in San Francisco)
working on critical projects with real and immediate impact. There will also be
opportunities to travel domestically within Uganda to better understand Fenix’s
customer base.
Key
Responsibilities
- Work
with key business stakeholders to collect business requirements and ensure
product design serves the needs of the organization. - Create
detailed specs for software engineering team and iterate to an
implementable solution. - Determine
the priority and release schedule of new tools and features and communicate
timelines, and release notes to all key stakeholders - Manage
growing team of software engineers and developers. - Serve
as the resident expert and liaison to the business for Fenix software. - Help
create and design innovative new financial product offerings for customer
base, and guide the implementation of the tools needed to launch. - Interface
with and own relationship with any third party partner providers offering
supplementary software solutions. - Test
all newly developed features for desired form and functionality and
provide feedback to engineering team. - Training
various business representatives on key software functionality and
updates. - Continually
seek to optimize user experience and user interface of the product. - Track
data needs of the business and ensure product design allows for capturing
of all key metrics needed. - Collect
information and data about potential bugs and assess the severity of the
error. - Refine
and improve upon the current software development process and toolset.
Required Skills
& Experience
- 2+
years of product development experience, preferably at a software company.
- Ability
to maintain big-picture vision while simultaneously focusing on the minute
details. - Leadership
and project management experience: we are looking for entrepreneurial
candidates who have started or contributed significantly to a particular
project, team, or new company and we especially value candidates who have
seen projects through from start to finish, from design to scale up phase.
- Commitment
to live and work with Fenix in East Africa for at least 1 year. - Strong
interpersonal skills to interface with all members of both the business
and engineering teams. - Outstanding
written and verbal communications skills (English). - High
competency in Microsoft Office products. - Ability
to work independently. - Thrives
on teamwork. - Bachelor
degree.
Highly Desired
Skills
- Education
and/or work experience in East Africa. - Programming
background, preferably background in Django / Python. - MySQL
database familiarity. - Masters
degree.
