The Office of Sustainability is a joint initiative of the Office of
the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), and the Office of the
Vice-President (Facilities and Operations). The Office of
Sustainability creates a hub for campus, academic and facilities
sustainability initiatives. Its goal is to serve as a catalyst to
advance thinking, learning, and action about sustainability through
strategic planning, communications, and outreach. Faculty, staff,
students, and communities will be engaged in the sustainability
performance of all campuses. Sustainability initiatives will focus on
global and local challenges, including energy, climate, water,
ecosystem health, human health, and social transformation.

The Project Planner – Certification & Metrics will work with staff
from across the University of Alberta to execute the development,
production, coordination and delivery of building certifications.

Duties
• Prepares, reviews and submits project documentation for credits
related to green certification standards including BOMA BESt (in
collaboration with Waste Diversion Recycling Coordinator), LEED and
Green Globes
• Engages with BOMA BESt Inspector on site tours and audits of submission
• Collaborates with Associate Director, Buildings & Grounds,
Facilities & Operations on identification and facilitation of
certification of building related to BOMA BESt
• Provides continuance audits and re-certification of University buildings
• Coordinates building certification audits including conducting
preliminary audit with project teams and scheduling, coordinating and
managing recurring calls and/or meetings with external review teams
and project teams
• Provides advice and expertise to a variety of teams on campus to
influence adoption of sustainable practices in new and renovated
buildings; this will include gathering information about current
practices/trends, researching and making recommendations on options
that may be of benefit to our campus and making recommendations for
changes and or improvements to achieve a higher level credit
• Serves as an institutional repository and specialist when it comes
to knowledge associated with sustainability elements in building
construction and renovation; this position would be a key point of
contact on construction and renovation projects when it comes to
review/recommendation of green materials and fixtures
• Administers the Sustainability Information Management System
including data entry, content updates, sustainable building
information sheets, quality control, report generation and report
tracking
• Identifies and facilitates opportunities for students and faculty to
leverage buildings as part of the Campus as a Living Lab program
• Presents project materials and resources to campus audiences
• Prepares written reports summarizing findings explaining and
quantifying various aspects of buildings for use in communications
materials (e.g. brochures, websites, etc.)
• Works to integrate University of Alberta sustainability branding
into outreach signage showcasing sustainability features
• Participates in outreach and engagement efforts for all programs
offered by the Office of Sustainability
• Collaborates with communications staff and prepares content for
special events, electronic newsletter, website, social media, feature
articles, success stories, outreach campaigns, memos, speeches and
presentations by applying key messages and identifying specific
audiences
• Collaborates with Program Leads to develop communications plans and
products that contribute and support events, contests, public
meetings, announcements, awareness campaigns, project promotions,
program launches and presentations

Qualifications
• The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture,
Engineering, Planning, Building Operations, or Environmental Science;
equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
• Minimum 3 years relevant professional experience working in an
office environment
• Green building certification designation (e.g., LEED Green Associate)
• Relevant and proven sustainability industry knowledge and experience
(e.g., number of green building certification projects worked
on/facilitated)
• Facilitation and negotiation training would be beneficial
• Proficiency and experience with MS Office required (advanced Excel
skills preferred)
• Strong interpersonal and customer-service skills, with ability to
develop strong relationships
• Ability to speak, present and provide orientations and technical
training workshops in front of a large group
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Energetic, detail-oriented and able to prioritize
• Excellent judgment, analytical thinking, problem-solving and
advanced organizational skills
• Strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability for
delivering high quality work
• Ability to work well both independently and on teams, as well as
following up with people
• Knowledge of construction practices preferred
• Must work well under pressure with proactive approach to routine and
non-routine occurrences
