Responsibilities:
• Keep management informed on all issues relating to the project’s environmental standards and compliance
• Communicate with sectoral managers, company staff and contractors regarding environmental compliance requirements and other matters of environmental importance.
• Review and refine Environmental Management Plans in consultation with the appropriate managers.
• Ensure that adequate resources are always made available for the effective implementation of all environmental mitigation and control measures.
• Support the planning for action to be taken in the event of spills or leakages of hazardous materials, and other environmental emergencies.
• Support company staff and contractors in planning for action to be taken in the event of accidents and other emergencies threatening human welfare.
• Lead Environmental Audits and Environmental Compliance Reviews and formally report findings
• Ensure that adequate action is taken to resolve unacceptable issues identified during Environmental Audits and Environmental Compliance Reviews.
• Manage a comprehensive programme of hydro-meteorological monitoring, using instrumentation as appropriate, and oversee a database of recordings that develops an increasing understanding of the environment and environmental interactions in the project areas.
• Undertake day-to-day liaison with the statutory and non-statutory authorities, other interested agencies and members of the public.
• Oversee the introduction of suitable processes, systems and training to lead to ISO 14001 accreditation
• Oversee the appropriate recycling or disposal of waste materials, including hazardous substances, in the most environmentally sound manners possible under Liberian conditions.
• Investigate all environment-related complaints received by the company internally, and externally from government agencies, individuals and interest groups, and recommend to the SHE Manager any actions that may be necessary in response.
• Develop appropriate materials for environmental awareness and community interaction training, and oversee the delivery of these trainings.
• Mentor and develop environmental staff
• Prepare reports on all aspects of environmental compliance for the SHE Manager and the COO.
Requirements
• Minimum of 15 years experience in managing environmental impacts and mitigation measures in West Africa or a similar environment, preferably in the mining sector.
• Relevant advanced degree
• Have adequate knowledge and implementation experience of international standards such as World Bank Safeguard Policies, IFC Performance Standards and Industry Specific Guidelines
