Effects of Global Warming on the Environment

The effects of global warming shall be
described on the elements or component that made up the environment which
includes: air, water and land( soil).
i. Effect of global warming on the air: Ezinwa (2004) stated that the major
environmental impact of air pollution includes green house effect and the major
green house gases. Involved are described to include carbon-dioxide (CO2),
chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O)
and ozone (CO3) which are been generated primarily from the burning
of fossil fuels (coal-oil) natural gas). The health and environmental cost and
human suffering that global warming has caused especially in developing countries
where there are inadequate regulation to protect the health of humans and the
environment is so tremendous (Eldon & Bradley, 2004). The effects of global
warming in the atmosphere (air) include the following:

Ozone layer depletion and gas flaring effects
·        
Air
·        
Seasonal varieties harsh weather conditions
ii.     
Effect of Global Warming on the Land: Olojoba (2009) pointed out some of the
effect of global warming on land (soil) which reduces yield in agricultural
productivity and damaged of crops. Global warming will seriously affect
rainfall and agricultural. The present day difference between temperatures at
the poles and those at the equator is a major force driving the atmospheric
circulation. Thus, greater heating at the poles than at the equator will change
atmospheric circulation patterns as well as rainfall distribution patterns.
Higher temperature promotes more evaporation and a greater ability of the atmosphere
to hold moisture, which can enhance precipitation. Some regions will be drier,
and others will be wetter. The frequency of droughts is expected to increase,
as well as the frequency and intensity of rainstorms (and therefore flood).
Further changes in climate could be initiated by alteration in the global
oceanic circulation which could be brought on by green house warming
iii.   Effects of Global Warming on Water (Hydrological Cycle/Aquatic
Lives):
Robin
(2011) stated that global warming helps to alleviate the effects termed ocean
acidification “primarily known to be acid rain“ and it results to the
following effects:

Acid rain causes acidification of lakes and streams. This
could also be due to leaching of toxic metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury,
aluminium and copper from catchments areas.
·        
Acid rain contributes to the damage of trees at high
elevation
·        
Acid rain affects many sanative forest soil and paints,
including irreplaceable buildings.
·        
Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NO)
goes and their particulate water derivative affects visibility and also
endangers health of man.
