Effect of poor refuses management to health

According to Health Impact of Solid
Waste [HISW] (2016), health effect of poor refuse management are stated as
follow:
i.
Organic domestic waste poses a serious
threat since their fermentation process creates favorable conditions for the
survival and growth of microbial pathogens. Direct handling of solid waste can
result in various types of infectious and chronic diseases which exposes the
waste workers to poor health conditions.

ii.
Exposure to hazardous waste can affect
to human health, children being more vulnerable to these pollutants. Direct exposure
can lead to disease through chemical exposure as the release of chemical waste
into the environment lead to chemical poisoning.
iii.
Waste from agriculture and industries
can also cause serious health risk. Uncollected solid waste can also obstruct
storm water runoff resulting in the forming of stagnant water bodies that
become the breeding ground of mosquito which in turn spread malaria parasite.
iv.
Waste dump near a water source also
cause contamination of the water body or ground water source. Direct dumping of
untreated waste into river, sea and lake result in the accumulation of toxic
substances in the food chain through the animals and plants that feeds on them.
v.
Disposal of hospitals and other medical
waste requires special attention since these can create major health hazard.
This waste generated from the hospital, health care centers, medical
laboratories and research center such as discarded syringes, needle, bandage,
swabs, plastic and other type of infectious waste are often disposed with the
regular non-infectious waste.
vi.
Waste treatment and disposal site can
also create health hazard for their neighborhoods. Improperly operated
incineration plant can cause air pollution and improperly manage and designed
landfill can attracts all types of insects and rodents of public health
importance.
