Working under the guidance of the Operations Supervisor, the Youth &
Community Education Coordinator will delive
r a focused effort to
involve more Thunder Bay youth and community residents in
environmental stewardship activities, developing outreach initiatives
for schools and community groups, and expanding EcoSuperior’s
involvement in community events. Topic areas will include waste
reduction, litter prevention, energy and water conservation,
environmental health, active transportation and pollution prevention.
Job Duties
The position will involve a great variety of activities, requiring the
development of excellent planning, time management, and organizational
skills. There is a strong emphasis on classroom presentations, from
kindergarten to high school, delivered for a range of funding
agencies. Interaction with youth and community at special events and
presentations throughout the year will require excellent communication
and customer service skills. The Coordinator will also be a part of
the larger team of program coordinators at EcoSuperior, developing new
programs and taking part in the continuing growth of the organization.
Data tracking, report writing and media liaison will also be a part of
the work.
The Youth & Community Education Coordinator will:
• deliver EcoSuperior’s existing classroom presentations and develop
new ones in conjunction with EcoSuperior’s program coordinators.
• develop, deliver and promote a range of topical presentations and
activities for community groups of all ages.
• design and deliver EcoSuperior’s outdoor summer daycamp program for children
• create new youth-oriented activities and events
• assist in the promotion of education programming and stewardship activities
General office duties will also include:
• Actively ensure that the program, funders and EcoSuperior receive
maximum positive exposure within the community or region.
• Answer inquiries from the public specific to your area of expertise
• Liaise and assist with other program coordinators especially where
programs are complementary
• Participate as a member of program-related community groups or committees
• Prepare written material and visuals for website sections, displays
and presentations
• Maintain a suitably organized workstation
• Ensure that all program files are stored, updated and accessible on
the office network
• Assist with office maintenance chores and customer service when required
• Participate in staff meetings
• Assist in preparation and staffing for special events
• Adhere to organization policies and procedures
• Other duties assigned as necessary
Qualifications
A candidate with a B.Ed degree and classroom experience is preferred,
but there are a range of educational backgrounds that may meet the
needs of this position, from environmental studies, outdoor recreation
to geography, etc. Experience in public speaking and working with
youth will be important, with classroom experience a considerable
asset. Most important is the candidate’s passion for creating change
and communicating with others. Strong organizational skills,
enthusiasm and an ability to work independently will also be critical.
A driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required. Physical
requirements of the job include some heavy lifting (displays etc.)
Starting wage is $17.90 per hour, and a benefits package including
life insurance, dental and extended medical coverage is available.
This is a full-time contract with annual renewal depending on
available funding beginning in January 2015. Hours of work are 8:30 am
to 4:30 pm with occasional weekend and evening events. Work is based
out of the EcoSuperior offices at 562 Red River Road in Thunder Bay,
Ontario.
