Definition of Terms

i.           
Environment: This has to
do with the sum total of the main surrounding which includes all living and
non-living elements that exist.
ii.           
Degradation: This is the
alteration of the natural constituent of the environment (land and water).
iii.           
Environmental
Degradation
: This is the introduction of foreign substance into
the environment in quantity/concentration that is great to cause undesirable
changes in the physical, chemical and biological environment (land and water).

iv.           
Hazard: Any state of
unsafe condition to both property and equipment or personal or any condition or
substance that has the potential of causing injury or danger.
v.           
Environmental Health: This is the
process of determining whether the environment safe so that it does not constitute
nuisance or hazard to man.
vi.           
Environmental
Pollution:
Environmental pollution is the objectionable or the
contamination of the physical and biological component of the earth/atmosphere
by the activities of man or addition of component or energy directed or
indirectly to the environment in such quantity that interferes with the
legitimate or has adverse on the materials, life of human, animals,
micro-organism and plant in the environment.
vii.           
Pollution: This is the
introduction of foreign substance or addition of energy or compound directly or
indirectly through human activities which cause undesirable physical, chemical
and biological characteristic of water, soil or air that may has harmful effect
on human life, animal, plant and the ecosystem which interferes with the full
chain or affect the health and welfare of the people.
viii.           
Agricultural
Wastes:
These are wastes emanating from agricultural farm
e.g. plantain and bananas skin leaves and animal manure and droppings which
have adverse effect on the environment.
ix.           
Waste: Waste is
defined as useless, unwanted and discarded material resulting from normal
community activities (consumption, recreational product, etc.).
x.           
Contaminants: These are
substances, energy or physical change that are present in such a quantity that
has detrimental effect on the environment, materials and organisms in the
environment.
