Feed the Children is seeking a Country Director in Malawi. Contract Term: One year, renewable to four years.
Start Date: June 15, 2011.
Feed The Children is an international, nonprofit relief organization with headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, that delivers food, medicine, clothing and other necessities to individuals, children and families who lack these essentials due to famine, war, poverty, or natural disaster. The organization implements development projects worldwide that focus on providing sustainable sources of nutrition to vulnerable children and their families through income generation, community mobilization and agriculture production support.
In September 2010, FTC, Inc. in Malawi began implementing the USAID- funded Tiwalere Project. This exciting 5-year project is a public-private partnership that takes a comprehensive approach to food security, nutrition education, income generation and water and sanitation. The project works directly with Community Based Childcare Centers (CBCCs) to identify and serve our priority beneficiaries, Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVCs). Through FTC’s alliance with World Relief, Orphan Support Africa, and Total Land Care, the Tiwalere Project provides high quality, community-based, sustainable interventions for OVCs the families and communities that support them. When fully scaled upward, the Project’s AOR will include the Central and Northern Regions of Malawi. Feed The Children, Inc. in Malawi also provides food security and watsan services to orphanages and CBCCs in the country’s southern region through its Tiwasamale Project.
This current project continuously seeks opportunities for growth and diversification of services. FTC, Inc., Malawi now seeks a dynamic and creative Country Director to lead implementation of these projects and to build the organization’s capacity and operational scope in Malawi. The appropriate candidate will have the proven ability to consistently exceed objectives within complex programs while embracing the challenge of developing new and innovative programs that effectively serve FTC’s priority beneficiaries. The selected candidate will recognize the importance of building strong partnerships with community leaders, government officials, other NGOs, UN agencies, and donors.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Oversee management of program implementation and meet or exceed all project objectives, and ensure that project implementation is best serving FTC’s priority beneficiaries;
Oversee management of all program sectors: project, finance, logistics, HR, and administration; Continually strengthen FTC’s partnership with USAID;
Foster new partnerships and strengthen existing partnerships with UN Agencies, GoM Ministries, and other NGOs through effective and diplomatic representation of FTC’s mission;
Identify opportunities for program growth and develop winning funding proposals that fit squarely within FTC’s long-term strategic vision for Malawi and the East Africa Region;
Consistently provide timely reporting to USAID and achieve deliverables in a timely fashion; Regularly communicate with FTC’s Home Office in Oklahoma City, and actively contribute to FTC’s regional program coordination efforts;
Fully participate in all relevant NGO/UN coordination and strategy meetings in Malawi;
Facilitate and oversee all program monitoring and evaluation and make timely correlating alterations; All other duties commensurate to that of an effective Country Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
At least 10 years senior level international management experience with demonstrated success in managing complex projects from multiple donor sources, including extensive experience implementing child-focused projects;
Extensive experience with and knowledge of, USAID and other institutional donors;
Post-graduate degree in Public Health, International Development, Education, Childhood Development, Nutrition, Agriculture, Social Work, or related field; Proven ability to provide constructive and positive guidance and support to project staff at all levels;
Demonstrated capacity for successfully leading teams to identify new programming opportunities and to develop thorough and winning funding proposals;
Extensive experience working effectively with partner organizations for program development and implementation;
Demonstrated capacity for fostering and maintaining constructive and effective working relationships with international NGO headquarter offices;
Strong diplomacy and representational skills;
Excellent English report and proposal writing skills; A demonstrated commitment to building and implementing programs that provide tangible, sustainable benefits to vulnerable children;
FTC will place priority on a candidate’s verifiable capacity for professionalism and mutual respect for his/her coworkers, supervisors, and, above all, FTC clients;
Extensive work and living experience in Africa is highly preferred.
This position reports to the Senior Vice President for International Programs at FTC’s Headquarters in Oklahoma City.
