Causes of poor refuse management

According
to Unuraye and Olojoba (2005) the following are the causes of poor refuse
management:

i.
Lack of fund

ii.
Poor workers salary which sometimes
lead to strike.

iii.
Inadequate equipment

iv.
Lack of maintenance of equipment’s

v.
Traffic congestion

vi.
Lack of disposal site.

Lack of fund: Inadequate
fund has undoubtedly impede the effective refuse management in ugly populated
area, poor salaries or wages which lead to strike. Frequent strike action by
the employees of refuse or solid waste management authority whenever they are
demanding for good condition services militate against effective refuse
disposal system. These incessant strikes resulted in manpower loss to the
management and delay in performing its obligations.
Inadequate equipment:
Inadequate equipment has brought a setback to waste disposal system in our
cities. Vehicles and other heavy equipment such as machine, shovels and storage
containers are inadequate in most of the time.
Improper maintenance of equipment: Due
to poor economic situation of the sub-region importation of spare parts in the
maintenance of refuse vehicles and equipment has become impossible due to lack
of foreign exchange to purchase spare parts for the vehicles and other
equipment use for various refuse collection. This deplorable condition has
reduced the numbers of vehicle used in the collection of refuse.
Traffic congestion:
Traffic situation in our urban center hamper solid waste management. Many of
these cities are noted for chaotic traffic congestion which affects round trip
intervals between collection points to disposal and back to collection point.
Lack of disposal site: Owing
to rapid growth of the cities, many disposal sites have been encircled within
the cities centre. Continuous usage of this disposal site will pose a serious
danger to public health hence new site is usually located at the outskirt of
these cities which might be too far away for collection point.
