Start Date: January 5th, 2015

Reporting Relationship
• Reports to and works under the supervision of the Outdoor Education
Manager and Executive Director.

Purpose of the Position
• Assists in the delivery of high quality, curriculum linked outdoor
programming to visiting school. Insures all applicable safety
standards are met. Assists in the development of curricula,
instructional aids and appropriate teaching strategies. Assists in
overnight supervision. On site accommodation provided.

Scope of the Position
• Appointed as assistant in the delivery of quality environmental and
outdoor programming; to insure that high educational standards are met
and to assist in the development of curricula, instructional aids and
teaching strategies within the administrative policies and procedures
established and directed by the Executive Director.

Responsibilities

Instruction:
• Responsible for assisting in the delivery of Camp Kawartha’s
curriculum linked programming,
• Thoroughly prepared to help deliver programs to a high, professional standard
• Responsible for providing assisting with appropriate in-field and
in-class supervision for visiting students.
• Implements experiential teaching strategies

Curricula Development:
• When requested, assists in the development of curricula, educational
aids/displays and other appropriate educational materials.

Other:
• Assists in developing and maintaining Camp Kawartha’s nature
playscapes, nature centre and learning trails.
• Responsible for liaising with the Executive Director, Outdoor
Education Manager and other Instructors
• Assists in the development of appropriate, interactive displays.
• Responsible for ensuring the safety and adequacy of equipment and materials.
• Assists in equipment storage, inventory and repairs, as required.
• Follows all requirements as outlined in the Outdoor Education Policy
and Procedures Manual.
• Acts as the overnight onsite emergency contact Monday – Thursday
• Meal time management duties

Working Conditions
• Work has a high public profile and extensive student contact; and is
subject to tight deadlines and interruptions.
• Work is 32 hours per week. May be subject to weekend and evening
hours as required.

Working Relationships
• Receives direction, guidance and encouragement from Executive
Director and Outdoor Education Manager
• Works in a spirit of cooperation and teamwork with other staff
• Works in a positive, sensitive and cooperative manner with students,
parents and visiting teachers.
• Provides encouragement and support to insure that each outdoor
education visit is of the highest quality

Knowledge and Skills
• Excellent knowledge of environmental and outdoor education in
particular: natural history, leadership and outdoor recreation.
• Experience in teaching and curriculum design
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching, particularly the implementation
of experiential techniques
• Teaching certificate highly recommended
• Exhibits a high degree of initiative and self-direction; good
analytical, organizational and high level of oral and written
communication skills
• High level computer skills including word processing, graphic
ability and data management
• Ability to work with tact and discretion, good public relation
skills, good project management skills

Impact of Error
• Poor quality teaching could adversely affect the camp’s reputation.
Attitudinal problems could lead to a lack of cooperation with students
and impact on the camps ability to deliver quality programming.

Control
• Supervised by Executive Director and Outdoor Education Manager

Qualifications Required:
• Must have clear Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector check to work near
children.
• Must have Standard First Aid & CPR
• NLS and/or Level II ropes a definite asset
• University or college degree in outdoor education. Experience in
outdoor and environmental education an asset.
• Demonstrated ability to instruct elementary and secondary students
• Creative, interactive style of teaching. Experience in utilizing
experiential teaching strategies.
• High level of computer skills including word processing,
spreadsheets, data base management, web design
• Demonstrated ability to organize, problem solve and manage
• Exhibits a high degree of initiative and self-direction; good
analytical, organizational and high level of oral and written
communication skills
• An appreciation and understanding of the dynamics of a
not-for-profit organization
• Appreciates and maintains the confidential nature of this position.
Ability to work with tact, discretion and maintain a positive,
cheerful attitude
• Experience working in a team setting
