Bulungi Creative ,In-country Manager Jobs in Uganda

Job description
We
are looking for an In-country Manager to be our in-country contact to run all
day-to-day Creative Thinking program needs, as well as fundraising, marketing
and budgeting efforts. The Manager will oversee the local Program Manager,
local volunteers and interns. For more information, please see the overview of
responsibilities below.

Bulungi
Creative (bulungi.org) is a nonprofit organization located in Jinja, Uganda,
with a focus on creativity. Creativity in thinking differently and considering
other options – options often seen as peculiar, absurd or unnecessary. But we
feel that the ones that think absurdly different are the ones that think about
what should be done, not what has been done. Those are the ones that inspire
necessary change. Suddenly, creativity seems like a good idea.
Bulungi’s
key activation is the Creative Thinking program, working in local primary
schools to complement the Ugandan education program. Our focus is to fill the
need and void present in developing students’ creative and critical thinking
through a purposefully disruptive curriculum focused on challenging the
conventional and stimulating individual creative thought. The education system
based on repetition and memorization is prominent in Uganda. While it can be an
effective tactic to remember facts, it doesn’t foster thinking. Instead,
children simply grow up remembering something, but not knowing why, how or what
it means. We aim to work closely with the school teachers to integrate creative
thinking skills into all subjects they teach.
Bulungi
is currently working with over 800 primary school students per year in the
Jinja area from primary 2 through primary 7. The program is incredibly
cost-efficient while maximizing our resources to push students to think as
individually, critically and creatively as possible. Each lesson we have is
done with a strategic plan that has been developed to start with basic thinking
skills and then build upon the previous week to have students utilize those
more advanced skills in their daily lives. Our goal is to have students develop
skills that become a part of their everyday thinking, not simply relegated to
the hours we are in class with them.
The
Bulungi culture is a bit different. If others do it, we probably don’t. If we
do it, they likely disapprove. When we need new ideas, we head to the bar. Or
the river. If we’re bored, we take a run to the market to scour second-hand
t-shirts. Productivity comes in a variety of ways and inspiration comes from
everywhere. We don’t push or create unnecessary work. When it comes down to it,
we do what works, and, sometimes, doing what you want is the most effective
route to creative solutions.
