Location: Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula, Ontario
Note: 13 weeks of employment only – see qualifications at bottom.

Under leadership of the Dark Sky Committee and a Community Mentor:

Develop Public Awareness Materials
• conduct research on other Dark Sky communities
• draft and revise as required Dark Sky website content for Dark Sky Committee approval
• develop and revise as necessary flyers for homeowners, retailers and contractors for approval by Dark Sky Committee
• manage formal launch of Website

Community Outreach
• develop communications plan to publicize broadly the availability of free light audits and conversion plan subsidy
• implement communication plan for free light audits and conversion program
• design community outreach plan
• prepare power point presentations for speaking events to convey why Dark Sky conservation is important
• use the map of the community’s night sky quality as a starting point as the basis for community outreach and schedule presentations at numerous community events and with various community groups
• visit businesses to explain merits of preserving the Dark Sky
• implement schedule of outreach presentations
• begin outreach to adjacent communities — Wiarton, Owen Sound, Port Elgin and Southhampton — by connecting with their Dark Sky community volunteers and planning a coordinated communications campaign, and if possible implement portions of the plan
• organize a locally-sponsored volunteer recognition event
• prepare summary of results and lessons learned for posting on BPBA website

Community Survey to Measure Awareness
• based upon Committee feedback, design and revise a “baseline” survey to take a quick measure of residents’ understanding of why Dark Skies are important
• conduct the survey
• finalize criteria for corporate recognition and recommend businesses that should be recognized
• manage the design and production of plaques
• contact businesses, issue invitations and organize the recognition event
• design and administer a “post-intervention” survey to measure of residents’ increase in awareness from start of project

Administration
• write up monthly reports for the Board that track results achieved against plan
• assess success of the project and prepare final report

Qualifications:
Education and experience in environmental studies, communications with an interest in Dark Sky lighting. University education preferred.

Requirements:
• under 30 yrs of age,
• not returning to school in September,
• access to car and laptop computer
$15/hr with allowance for car (.46/km)
Clean driving record (abstract) required.
