Academy of Hope (AAH)-Coordinators
in
rural Uganda (starting June 2015)
These
are two fascinating, challenging, truly rewarding international development
positions in rural Uganda. AAH is a U.S.non-profit with education and health
programs in Uga

nda. The Volunteer Coordinator and Outreach Coordinator are 18 month
positions held by volunteers from the U.S. Room and Board, a small stipend,
local transport, and transportation to Uganda from the U.S. are provided.
Primary responsibilities of the Volunteer Coordinator are to coordinate
volunteers, support the primary school and library, coordinate child
sponsorships and assist with outreach and donor communications. The position
reports to Program Director, Head teacher (HT) for school activities, and to
the Executive Director (ED) for volunteer, sponsorships and donor-related
responsibilities. The Volunteer Coordinator also works in close concert and
partnership with the AAH Outreach Coordinator, who focuses on improving
educational quality at poot local schools and on community devt inc. women’s
microfinance and health activities.

VOLUNTEER
COORDINATOR
I:
Supervision and support of AAH volunteers
  • Meet
    with HT, Program Director, Outreach Coordinator and staff to identify
    volunteer needs and project ideas
  • Work
    with ED to develop and implement volunteer recruitment strategy
  • Respond
    to volunteer queries and determine projects for individual volunteers
    before they arrive in Uganda
  • Lay
    groundwork for volunteer projects before they arrive (ex: informing school
    staff, getting contact information of key people, purchasing supplies)
  • Pick
    up incoming volunteers, and arrange their transport to the village
  • Orient
    volunteers, review code of conduct and report concerns with enforcement or
    violation of rules. Act as a cultural guide for incoming volunteers. Help
    ensure their comfort while in the village
  • Work
    with volunteers to ensure they can accomplish their goals.
  • Manage
    Guest Houses and its budget – maintain adequate supply of food, water, and
    other household supplies and organize repairs and construction at the
    Guest House as necessary
  • Supervise
    housekeepers in charge of cooking, cleaning and laundry and ensure they
    have the funds necessary.
II:
Support AAH Primary School
  • Work
    with teachers and organize read aloud sessions in classrooms
  • Help
    teachers in opening days to assist in the classroom management
  • Assist
    the librarian and hold read aloud sessions in library
  • Assist
    with the annual Reading Challenge and Reading Carnival
  • Work
    with librarian to assess and report opportunities for literacy outreach to
    village adults/children utilizing library to the Outreach Coordinator
  • Support
    Head Female teacher in coordinating girls’ mentoring activities
  • Attend
    weekly planning meetings with Program Director, Headmaster, Outreach
    Coordinator, Bursar and Purchasing Officer as convened
  • Assist
    HT with other activities as needed
III.
Coordinate Child Sponsorship Program
  • Review
    how the Program works, its importance to AAH and letter
    writing/distribution dates with Project Director, HT and teachers
  • Coordinate
    with Child Sponsorship Chair in U.S. and oversee timely distribution and
    collection of letters from primary and secondary students
  • Work
    with teachers to improve student letter writing skills and ensure letters
    are personalized and individualized properl
  • Explore
    ways to make the program a fun, learning experience for students (i.e.
    integrate as a creative writing activity)
  • Coordinate
    photos and profiles of all primary and secondary students and fulfill
    special request photos of students.
  • Review
    and send student letters/photos/profiles to U.S.
  • Rapidly
    inform U.S. of changes that impact sponsorships (i.e. student drop-outs,
    long absences, death in family or other tragedies.)
  • Support
    the US Volunteer Coordinator as appropriate and when volunteers confirm
    interest in coming to AAH.
IV.
Social Media and Donor Communications
  • Write
    and submit articles and photos (i.e. facebook, twitter, website, AAH blog,
    annual report, newsletter and monthly article for ATS newsletter) to
    donors/supporters
  • Help
    keep the blog updated regularly with bi-weekly blog posts
  • Evaluate
    and recommend ways to bring to life stories about AAH
    students/teachers/local people to supporters and demonstrate impact of AAH
  • Coordinate
    student and teacher writings for use in AAH publications
  • Write
    student/teacher success stories as requested
  • Report
    anecdotes or relevant information supporting US efforts for AAH
  • Assist
    with reports to funders (e.g. USAID, foundations, etc.)
Reports – Submit monthly
written reports for Board; as needed/requested for Executive Director, Program
Director and HT
OUTREACH
COORDINATOR.
AAH’s
primary school has had tremendous success, but we know the true measure of
success is in replicating the education model so more children at nearby
schools get a better education.
I:
Oversee Outreach Efforts at local schools in Bududa and Manafwa districts
  • Coordinate
    with Program Director to identify needs and project ideas for outreach
    schools.
  • Track
    progress at outreach schools (e.g., student and teacher attendance,
    participation in school lunch program, PTA involvement, test scores, etc.
  • Work
    with ED and Program Director to develop and implement outreach strategy.
  • Meet
    with District and school officials to improve results at outreach schools.
  • Assist
    Volunteer Coordinator by identifying volunteer outreach projects before
    volunteers arrive (ex: informing school staff, getting contact information
    of key people, purchasing supplies)
  • Assist
    the Volunteer Coordinator in picking up incoming volunteers, and arrange
    their transport to the village
  • Attend

III.
Women’s Microfinance
  • Serve
    as a resource for the Women’s Microfinance program.

Qualifications
for both positions
:
College degree, preferably with some international studies. Previous successful
volunteer experience. Flexibility, adaptability, cross-cultural sensitivity,
and ability to live in a rural location with minimal creature comforts.
