African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS, www.nexteinstein.org)
is a pan-African network of centres of excellen

ce for postgraduate training,
research and outreach in mathematical sciences. Its mission is to enable
Africa’s brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers, problem
solvers and innovators capable of propelling Africa’s future scientific,
educational and economic self-sufficiency. The first AIMS centre opened in Cape
Town, South Africa in 2003; since 2011, AIMS has opened additional centres in
Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania. AIMS is preparing to open its 6th
Centre in Kigali, Rwanda. The goal of the AIMS Next Einstein Initiative
(AIMS-NEI) is to build a pan-African network of 15 centres of excellence across
the continent by 2023.

Each
AIMS centre provides an intensive and broad education to over 50 African
students each year and prepares them for leadership careers in academia,
governance and industry. The AIMS educational program relies on top

Mobile
& Web Application Developer – AIMS Global Network
In
this new role and reporting to the IT Manager – AIMS Global Network, you will
serve as a staff specialist on one or more systems and will be responsible for
the entire life cycle of an application to include analysis, coding, testing,
deployment and documentation.
You
will be responsible for the development and design of major and minor web
applications and components for users, as well as mobile applications (mostly
Android-based), and you also will structure, implement, and maintain database
systems. You will provide or secure web hosting services for the application
and website, and develop a cloud-based presence for the AIMS-NEI, while also
supporting staff in the use of internal systems, applications and databases.
This
is a full-time opportunity based at the AIMS-NEI Secretariat in Kigali, Rwanda.
Do
you have what we need?
  •  
Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline,
such as Computer Science or Engineering.
  •  
5+ years’ experience in developing
websites and/or web applications.
  •  
3+ years building secure web portals
for internal and publicly accessed sites.
  •  
Bilingual (French/English).
  •  
Working knowledge of object-oriented
programming concepts. Practical experience with object-oriented design and
modelling.
  •  
Solid understanding of navigation and
SEO.
  •  
Proficiency in planning and managing
large software development projects and managing in-house resources and
contracted services.
  •  
Front-end and some back-end development
experience. More important is the experience of seamless integration of front-
to back-end functionality.
  •  
Practical strong experience with .Net
Framework and Microsoft web development technologies.
  •  
Practical exposure and experience with
some or all of the following: ASP, PHP, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, C#, JSP and
Java, XML, PHP, Python, Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, ColdFusion Server, CFML,
IIS, Apache, Windows Server environments, Linux/Ubuntu Server. Additional
web-related technologies such as HTML5, JQuery, CSS3, AJAX, JSON and Web
Services (REST/SOAP), are preferred.
  •  
MCSD / MCPD qualification is desirable.
  •  
SQL Database Design & Programming
experience.
  •  
Self-sufficient in a PC environment
using MS Office Suite and internet applications (Dropbox, Skype, Gmail).
  •  
Desire and willingness to work in a
collaborative, innovative, flexible and team-oriented environment.
  •  
Excellent understanding of project
management principles.
  •  
Ability to set and manage priorities
judiciously.
  •  
Enthusiasm to work in a culturally
diverse organisation.
  •  
Ability and willingness to travel
within and outside of Africa with periodic stays of up to 1 month.
  •  
Willingness to work outside of normal
working hours, due to the geographic spread of the Network.
