Music therapy experience a plus

ASYV is currently recruiting dedicated
volunteers to spend one year volunteering at our youth village in Rwanda. The
service year begins in December 2011. Volunteers directly engage with the ASYV
community, using their skills and talents to help this blossoming community.

Overview: The aim of the music program at the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village*
is to provide a therapeutic outlet for self-expression for youth who have
experienced trauma. The Music Instructor will teach formal music classes in
instruments (piano and/or guitar) or voice, giving theoretical background and
global perspective on music theory and various musical traditions. The Music
Instructor will hold open hours for lessons and student practice in addition to
more structured classes. He or she will help coordinate performances at student
events and create educational music programs for the whole Village. ASYV
currently has a village choir, dance group and recording studio, in addition to
classes and informal training on individual types of music. The Music
Instructor should be prepared to complement and enhance the talents and
capabilities of Rwandan music staff. The Music Instructor may also be asked to
help coordinate the production of an album of student compositions or other
materials that publicize student’s musical talents.

position will likely comprise 50% of the volunteer’s time. The remaining time
should be dedicated to other areas of need in the Village. These projects may

Volunteers
spend one year living and working in the Village in collaboration with
permanent Village staff. This position is part of a cohort of 9 long-term
volunteers that are placed at ASYV Volunteer fellowship covers the cost of the
flight to Rwanda, health insurance, emergency evacuation insurance, room and
board, and a monthly stipend.

Volunteers
are expected to integrate into the community and build close relationships with
both students and staff. Most volunteers will be assigned to a family of
incoming youth to mentor throughout the year. Volunteers will be asked to spend
at least 10 hours on behalf of the Village at public engagements and other
speaking events upon their departure from the Village.
