Description:

Reporting to the
Senior Manager of Public Relations, the Manager, Advocacy Communications, will
oversee a team responsible for the design, implementation and evaluation of
strategies to position World Vision’s advocacy work with key donors, political
and public audiences through media and other PR outreach tools.

This includes
developing materials and resources that will reach targeted media in order to
engage Canadians and raise their awareness of World Vision’s advocacy work and
brand.

The manager will
work with PR colleagues, ensuring that, as applicable, World Vision’s advocacy
messages are integrated into other media relations activities including
emergency and marketing communications, and online resources.

The manager will
represent World Vision Canada on World Vision International’s advocacy, media
and communications teams and may represent the PR Department on
cross-functional teams in the Canadian office or elsewhere in the global
partnership.

The manager will
represent WVC among external NGOs and NGO coalitions on PR strategy and at
events that support WVC’s advocacy and government relations’ communications
goals.

Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities

The successful
candidate will be a team player who is flexible, nimble and able to adapt plans
to changing conditions. The role requires a sophisticated understanding of the
political landscape as well as the media environment. The candidate must
understand and anticipate the demands of reporters from a variety of markets,
as well as an appreciation and knowledge of digital media and its role in PR.

Job
Requirements:

The key role of the
Manager is to raise the profile of World Vision Canada as a leading child
focused relief, development and advocacy organization through effective
promotion and protection of the agency. Responsibilities include:

  • Publically
    profile executives and other key WVC spokespersons as child-focused
    development, relief and advocacy experts.
  • Work
    with WVI communications teams on key advocacy issues to encourage and
    enable the organization to speak with a global voice on behalf of children
    living in poverty and in emergency situations.
  • Provide
    media advice to help position World Vision Canada with Ottawa stakeholders
    for conducive charitable sector environment, brand and other
    organizational issues
  • Advise
    colleagues from Programs and Policy team, including Policy, Advocacy,
    Integration, Public Engagement and External Relations on advocacy and
    policy communications strategy and campaigns.
  • Work
    with Canadian NGOs and NGO coalitions to create advocacy-related
    communications that will achieve coalition goals while positioning WVC as
    a trusted and trustworthy partner and an advocate for children living in
    poverty.
  • Develop
    advocacy-related story/project outlines and briefing documents for
    journalists visiting World Vision projects overseas or covering
    international issues.
  • Provide
    key input on advocacy-related issues and concerns during emergency situations
    and other crises.
  • Assist
    in mitigating risks to World Vision’s reputation during internal crises by
    providing advocacy-related messaging where applicable.
  • Develop
    ongoing relationships with top Canadian print, radio, television and
    online journalists, especially those reporting on advocacy-related issues.
    Identify news and feature story ideas related to World Vision’s work and
    pitch ideas to appropriate media.
  • Research,
    write and distribute public relations material including news releases,
    media kit material, briefing documents etc. and ensure that material is
    tailored to communications vehicles (magazine, web, etc.) to enhance World
    Vision’s brand.

Other
Requirements

A post-secondary
diploma or degree in public relations, journalism, communications or relevant
field experience that demonstrates expertise in the development of
communications strategies is required.

The candidate must
have significant work experience (8 to 10 years) and recent experience in
public relations campaign and team management at an intermediate level,
including top-notch media relations skills, superior writing abilities, strong
people management and administrative abilities and well-developed
organizational and planning skills.

Knowledge of
political science, international news and affairs as well as an understanding
of the Canadian charitable sector is foundational to the position.

Proficiency in a
variety of related programs (MS Word, Lotus Notes, Excel, PowerPoint) and
industry-related software is expected.
