The Roanoke Star and Mill Mountain Park
No visit to Roanoke can be finished without visiting its primary sights. The Roanoke Star, additionally referred to as the Mill Mountain Star, is located atop Mill Mountain, along with the Hollywood Sign of the East. The 88.5-foot-tall Roanoke Star was constructed in 1949 as an annual decoration. It has now become the municipality’s prominent emblem, earning it the nickname “Star City.” One of the more common items for people to do in Roanoke, Virginia! The Mill Mountain Zoo, Wildflower Garden, and Exploration Center are all present.

Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway extends 469 kilometers from North Carolina to Virginia via spectacular natural beauty. It is frequently dubbed “America’s Favorite Drive” and represents one of America’s most scenic roadways. We spent the entire day driving surrounding the Blue Ridge Parkway, savoring the breathtaking scenery as well as fall colors. From milepost 120 at Mill Mountain to milepost 86 at Otter Peaks. The Parkway is a ten-minute drive from central Roanoke. There are numerous short and lengthy hiker breaks on the Blue Ridge Trail. As well as breathtaking views to pull off for photography!

The Peaks Of Otter Winery
While driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Make a quick stop at Peaks of Otter Winery & Orchards for some wine sampling. I’ve never seen such a variety of wine flavors before, from pumpkin to raspberry, pineapple, coconut (colada), and chocolate cherry bomb. Make sure to include Pumpkin Pie (Thanksgiving). And Cranberry (Christmas) on your sample platter this holiday season. The children don’t have to miss out either. Grab a bag and head to the orchard to pick some apples. That’s your Thanksgiving apple pie dessert arranged! Peaks of Otter Winery also practices sustainable farming.

The Roanoke Valley Greenways
The Roanoke Valley Greenways spans more than 30 miles through the many communities of Virginia’s Blue Ridge region. The routes allow you to bike, stroll, or run to interesting portions of the region, downtown districts, and the Roanoke River. This is another popular Roanoke activity that allows you to relax, and move around. And enjoy the lovely Fall colors, particularly along the river banks.

The Fall Foliage
Why not see it from within its golden canopy as you climb, and crawl? And glide amid the treetops at Tree Top Quest in Explore Park? Discover Park is off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Milepost 115. It covers hundreds of acres and features rolling hills, gorgeous forests, paths for hiking, and a riverside. And outdoor excitement flying through the treetops. We’ve been doing ziplines and obstacle courses as a family since Kalyra was four years old.
And this zipline course in Virginia’s Blue Ridge was one of our favorites. There are four courses of varying levels, and the age restriction is seven. Our favorites were Course 2A, which had fascinating obstacles. Such as enormous punching bags, and crawling through cycles of varying heights. And swinging crooked ladders, and Course 3. It was ziplines between trees with the occasional Tarzan swing thrown in.

Roanoke Pinball Museum
We have begun a new family hobby: vintage record collecting! In line with this newfound connection to the beloved old. We were thrilled to take our daughters to the Roanoke Pinball Museum. And prove how we enjoyed ourselves before the internet. I never realized there were so many different kinds of pinball machines! From 1932 styles to the more current Munster’s machine. It featured a baby pinball within the larger one to play, you could spend hours here playing over 65 games. Great news: the girls adored it, and Savannah has incorporated it. A pinball machine into her design for our future home.

Taubman Museum Of Art
The Taubman Museum of Art in Downtown Roanoke exemplifies a cheap and cultural Metro-Mountain escape. It has ten galleries that exhibit art from throughout the world, as well as American and regional art. Art Venture is an interactive exploring environment for youth that offers hands-on art activities. Admission is free!

Roanoke and Virginia’s Blue Ridge have boutique businesses and farmer’s markets. Antique shops brimming with local items and fascinating gift ideas for the holidays. The Historic Roanoke Downtown Market is a famous attraction for both tourists and locals. It has been serving farm-fresh vegetables regionally since 1882 and is open 24 hours an afternoon, seven days a week.
