Federal University, Oye-Ekiti shut down indefinitely over protests

Following the incident that led to the death of a student at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, on Tuesday, the institution’s management ordered the school to be shut down indefinitely.

Furthermore, students’ union activities of FUOYE students have been banned with immediate effect.

This was revealed early Tuesday in a special announcement on Voice 89.9FM.

“Following the unfortunately incident acted out by some youth in Oye Ekiti earlier today, the management of Federal University Oye-Ekiti hereby announce immediate and indefinite closure of the university to forestall further break down of law and order.”

“At the same time, the students’ union of the institution is disbanded indefinitely. Following this closure, the students population is hereby ordered to vacate the university premises no later than 10am tomorrow, 11th of September, 2019”, the announcement read.

Media reports disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force agents killed the institution’s 100-level student identified as Oluwaseyi Kehinde.

Several other students were also supposedly wounded on Tuesday in Oye and Ikole Ekiti, while students was protesting against bad electricity supply.

Also supposedly assaulted during the protest was Ekiti State Governor’s wife, Bisi Fayemi.

Our correspondent was told by eyewitnesses at the scene that the activities of police officers attached to the convoy of Mrs Fayemi turned the protest bloody.

Meanwhile, the murder was denied by the police. Caleb Ikechuckwu, the spokesman, said it was the students who attacked the governor’s wife’s convoy.
