Valencia defeat Barcelona to win Copa del Rey

Valencia beat Barcelona 2-1 to win Saturday’s Copa del Rey, ending the four-year winning streak of the Spanish champions in the competition, denying them a domestic double.

Kevin Gameiro and Rodrigo Moreno scored goals in the first half to give Marcelino’s dominant Valencia control over the final at the swelling Benito Villamarin stadium in Seville.

Record 30-time Barcelona Cup winners fought without Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele’s injured duo. But with a close-up finish, Lionel Messi pulled the Catalans back into the game.

Goncalo Guedes missed a gilt-edged chance in stoppage-time for Valencia but they held on to win their first major trophy since last lifting the cup in 2008.
