Special Olympics team gets $17.6 million funding

After his proposed cuts for athletic program that came under fire by Republicans and Democrats in the House of Congress, The United States President, Donald Trump made a shocking U-turn by overriding his budget to allocate a whooping sum of $17.6 million for the U.S. Special Olympic team on Thursday, 28th March, 2019.

Trump’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2020, which he released earlier this month, would have zeroed out funding for the Special Olympics, which has an allocation of $17.6 million this fiscal year.  The proposal which many believed Congress was not going to agree to defund the popular Special Olympics program in spite of Trump’s proposal. President Donald Trump had sought to cut funding last year as well and lawmakers added the funding back into the budget.

In defense of the proposal, Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos had struggled in testimony to Congress and both Trump’s Republicans and opposition Democrats had denounced the move.

President Donald Trump while speaking with reporters on the White House South Lawn, he stated that he had just heard about the controversy on Thursday morning.

The Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities or physical disabilities.

According to President Donald Trump, “I’ve been to the Special Olympics, I think it’s incredible and I just authorized a funding.  I heard about it this morning. I have overridden my people. We’re funding the Special Olympics.”
