Three suspected armed robbers have been arrested at the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos. The police in a statement on Sunday said they had arrested three suspected armed robbers who were part of a gang that robbed several homes in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos.
The police spokesperson, Chike Oti stated that before their arrest, the robbers engaged the policemen in a fierce shootout. During the shootout one of the robbers named Damilare Adegbaye aged 31 was shot on the leg and was arrested.
Another of the robbers who fled the scene, named Samuel Oyejide after intense shootout with the police was later arrested by the neighbouring vigilante group and was subsequently handed over to the police by the neighbourhood vigilante group. The third suspect, Haruna Ibrahim, 23, was arrested later in the evening of same day by Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives following confessions of the two suspects earlier arrested.
Upon arrest, a cut-to-size locally made pistol with three live cartridges were recovered from Damilare Adegbayi.
In the brief given by the police spokesperson he stated that “In view of the unfortunate incident, the Commissioner of Police (CP) directed the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) to take over investigation of the case from Dopemu Police Station and ensure that fleeing members of the armed robbery gang that perpetrated the act are arrested.”
To reassure the residents of Iyana Ipaja area of their safety, The CP has deployed two teams of SARS operatives to beef up the security in the area, they are to patrol Ipaja and environs until further notice.
