Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel has approved the Godswill Akpabio International stadium for President Muhammadu Buhari re-election flag-off campaign amidst initial concerns. The decision of Governor Udom to allow the president to make us of the stadium has been regarded by the Akwa-Ibom State wing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a sign of maturity in leadership rather than weakness as reported from some quarters of the state.
According to a former military governor of the state and the current Director General of the Divine Mandate Campaign Organisation, Idongesit Nkanga, Governor Udom decision to allow the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) President Muhammadu Buhari to use the stadium for the flag-off campaign shows that the governor is a man who has respect for constituted authority, especially the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The former military governor described the reactions of the members of the APC on the initial hesitation of the governor to approve the use of the stadium for the campaign based on the huge cost required for maintenance of the stadium after the event as a sign of selfish desperation and insensitiveness nature of some of the members of the APC.
He cited that the initial hesitation has nothing to do with politics of bitterness but on the need to safeguard the facilities of the state. He stated that some of the major critics of the governor’s initial hesitation when in power blatantly denied a former governor, Obong Victor Attah the use of the facilities of Ibom Hotels and Golf Resorts for the celebration of his 70th birthday.
Nkanga stated that history has it that Governor Udom do not only approve the use of the same facility for his 80th birthday but also bankrolled the cost of the event. This is a show of class and tact when compared to his predecessor. He also cited instances when the Akwa Ibom wing of the APC has been allowed to make use of the Uyo Township Stadium for their events.
He recalled when the Governor of Akwa Ibom state in September 2018 approved the use of the Uyo Township stadium for the APC to use less than 24 hours after the state 31st anniversary which took place in the same venue.
Nkanga stated that the maturity of the governor is unparallel if compared with what the APC would have done if the situation would have been reversed. He cited an instance when a former PDP presidential candidate was denied the use of the Eagle Square Abuja, after making full rental payment for the facility.
