Nutrition knowledge has
become a major problem amongst women in Akwukwu-Igbo, Oshimilli North Local
government Area of Delta State, due to lack of basic nutritional knowledge
amongst some women. This has great effect on the illiterate ones because they
lack the basic knowledge of nutrition. The non-illiterate women in Akwukwu-Igbo
pay no attention of the type of food they place their children eat, they leave
their children at home until they are back from farm. Therefore, the children
hunt around looking food what to eat, stealing people’s food and properties
when they are not at home.

More so, illiteracy and abject
poverty of the women in Akwukwu-Igbo does not create the knowledge or allow
women to know the importance of adequate diet exchange while feeding their
children. Illiterate women in Akwukwu-Igbo lack knowledge of nutrition intake
during pregnancy and development. The child will not be performing well both
academically and otherwise. Some women ignore, neglect and fail to meet up with
the dietary requirement of children, so they may place their children on junk
foods and carbohydrate foods only, which may lead the children to suffer from
some diseases. Poor and illiterate mother think less on type of food they feed
their children, they feed their growing children ignorantly and they do not
recognize when the child is over-weight or underweight. But the literate ones
found in the community provide adequately for their children nutritionally, and
they look healthier than the non-literate ones, this place a big difference
between literate and non-literate women. Because of these problems, I was move
to write on this project work.
