Background
Never
Again Rwanda (NAR) is a peace-building and social justice non-profit
organization that arose in response to the 1994 genocide perpetrated against
the Tutsis.
NAR’s
mission is to enhance citizens’ capacity to analyse the root causes of conflict
and facilitate dialogue among peers in order to generate ideas and activities
that work towards sustainable peace and socio-economic development.
Driven
by creative, involved and critical-thinking citizens, NAR aims to empower young
people and ordinary citizens with opportunities to become ‘active’ and engaged
citizens; guided by a vision of a nation towards sustainable peace and
development.
NAR’s
core programmatic focus:
  • Peace-Building
    and Social Justice
  • Governance
    and Rights
  • Research
    and Advocacy
  • Sustainable
    Livelihoods
  • Education
Some
of the activities undertaken by NAR in the different programmes include
debates, public speaking competitions, citizen reporting trainings, spaces for
peace group counselling, theatre performances, income-generating activities and
vocational training, human rights trainings, community dialogue, and leadership
skills development.
Key
Events and Activities in 2016
Throughout
2016, NAR continued its work with local communities in the creation of ‘Healing
Spaces for Peace’ and ‘Citizen Forums’ enabling ordinary people to be more
aware of their roles in participatory local decision making processes at local
and national government.
2016
was an exceptional year working with local communities and raising public
awareness of NAR’s approaches and achievements. This was demonstrated with the
launch of NAR’s research paper in August, 2016 ‘Governing with and for
citizens: Lessons from a post-Genocide Rwanda’.
In
September 2016, NAR also celebrated and raised awareness of the International
Day of Peace.
In
November, 2016, NAR hosted the ‘Societal Healing conference and Participatory
Governance’, at the Marriot hotel, to exchange experiences on healing, social
cohesion and reconciliation in post-genocide and extreme violent societies.
In
December 2016, NAR held the National Conference on Human Rights, at the Marriot
Hotel, under the theme of “Stand up for someone’s rights today: The Role of
Rwandan youth in promoting a sustainable culture of Human rights
” and
brought together youth and other key stakeholders.
