Community Based Sociotherapy Program

Consultancy period: July-August 2016

Introduction
The
Community Based Sociotherapy Program (CBSP) is initiated to improve
psychosocial well-being and strengthen interpersonal reconciliation and social
cohesion at the grass-roots level in Rwanda. Sociotherapy uses the group as a
therapeutic medium in the establishment of trust, the creation of an open
environment for discussion and the formation of peer-support structures. The
socio-groups facilitate community members to identify, acknowledge, share, and
manage together their everyday psychosocial problems related to the recent
history of political violence and its aftermath.
The
CBSP is a three year program implemented in eight districts (two districts in
each of the four provinces of Rwanda), which started in January 2014. A
consortium of three Rwandan NGOs is responsible for its implementation. The
program is funded by the Royal Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
To
implement its activities on field level, CBSP works with sociotherapists who
are trained by CBSP. Sociotherapists facilitate sociotherapy group sessions in
participants’ neighborhood. Each group, composed of twelve to fifteen
participants, is facilitated by two sociotherapists. One sociotherapy round
consists of fifteen weekly sessions, each session taking three hours. The
experience of hearing different stories and facilitating the group to uplift
the psychosocial wellbeing of participants may negatively affect the
psychosocial wellbeing of the sociotherapists. This happens in particular when
they are confronted with traumatic experiences of participants which are
similar to those they went through themselves. Another challenge
sociotherapists occasionally face are participants with severe mental health
problems who need professional treatment which they are not able to provide. To
facilitate professional follow-up on these particular cases, including the
cases in which sociotherapists are overwhelmed by what they hear, CBSP is
looking for an expert in psychology or related field to train CBSP staff to
give psychological supervision and equip them with tools and techniques of
conducting psychological supervision to the sociotherapists.
