Background
Under the guidance of the UNDSS Security Advisor
and the direct supervision of the Field Security Associate, the Radio
Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of
telecommunication equipment. The security of UN staff depends on this equipment
being properly installed and maintained.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Programming
    and maintenance of VHF and HF Radio Communication equipments;
  • Instalation
    of VHF and HF Radio Communications in Offices and UN Offices Vehicles;
  • Repair
    and Maintenance of VHF Reapeters on different sites;
  • Coordination
    with UN Agencies and National Authorities on matters related to Radio
    Frequencies and sharing of radio channels;
  • Responsible
    of issuing UN ID Cards and Database Management;
  • UN
    Satphone Managements;
  • Ensuring
    the Migration of Analogue to Digital of VHF Radio Communication;
  • Installation
    and maintenance of Power supply system including the UPS’s and solar
    power;
  • Erect
    antenna masts and install VHF/ HF antennas;
  • Train
    non-technical radio users on the operation of handle talkies, mobile
    radios, base stations etc;
  • Installation,
    Configuration of computers and upgrading of Operating systems and
    applications;
  • Computer
    Diagnosing, Troubleshooting and preventive maintenance;
  • Management
    of LAN Infrastructure (Structured Wiring, , Hubs, Switches, Cisco wireless
    system);
  • Maintenance
    of Office equipment (Photocopy machine, printer, fax etc.);
  • Maintain
    24/7 radio and telephone communications link with all UN Organizations in
    the country;
  • Ensure
    the availability of functional Emergency Communication System for the
    DO/SMT, SA and Wardens;
  • Ensure
    all communications equipment (HF, VHF radios, Fax machine, telephone
    lines) are serviceable for the smooth running of the UN operations;
  • Perform
    repairs of radios and related communications equipment, when required;
    Monitors the performance of the VHF/HF communications networks between the
    Capital  and the UN Field Offices to enable execution plans in times
    of need/crisis/emergency, as applicable;
  • Assist
    UN Agencies in acquiring telecommunicaton equipment and obtaining licenses
    from the Host Country regulatory organs;
  • Ensure
    periodic maintenance of all UN communication equipment including field
    vsists to the repaeter sites;
  • Keep
    inventory of UN Common Radio Room as well as UNDSS telecomuication
    equipment;
  • Perform
    other related duties asked by the supervisor.
Competencies
Core Competencies:
Communication:
  • Proven
    and efficient communication skills;
  • Able
    to work with minimum supervision, to make decisions, solve problems and
    report those solution to the Security Advisor;
  • Planning
    and organizing: Demonstrate ability to establish priorities and plan,
    coordinate and monitor own work plan.
 Fumctional Competencies
  • A
    solid knowledge of radio wave propagation, radio set layout and function,
    antenna design and function, electrical grounding, battery technology,
    wiring and connector techniques;
  • Familiar
    with computer systems and network structure, including windows and DOS
    based programs for radio reprogramming;
  • General
    knowledge of 220 volt electrical systems is needed;
  • Expected
    to drive to remote communications sites and to visit UN agencies for
    periodic maintenance checks;
  • Hold
    a valid driving license and be capable of going on long missions;

service and programme both analogue and digital UN telecommunication equipment/
systems.
Required Skills and Experience
Education:
  • Technical
    High School diploma in Computer Science or equivalent.
Experience:
  • 4
    years of experience in the Radio communication;
  • Very
    good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications;
  • Previous
    experience as Radio Technician is an advantage;
  • Analogue
    and Digital Radio Technician trainings are desirable.
Language:
Fluency in both written and oral English and
French.
