Community-Based Sociotherapy Program

Introduction
The
Community-Based Sociotherapy Program (CBSP) is initiated to improve
psychosocial well-being and strengthen in

terpersonal reconciliation and social
cohesion at the grass-roots level in Rwanda. Sociotherapy uses the group as a
therapeutic medium in the establishment of trust, the creation of an open
environment for discussion and the formation of peer-support structures. The
socio-groups facilitate community members to identify, acknowledge, share, and
manage together their everyday psychosocial problems related to the recent
history of political violence and its aftermath.

The
CBSP is a three year initiative to be implemented in eight different districts
(two districts in each of the provinces of Rwanda) and started in January 2014.
A consortium of three Rwandan NGOs – Prison Fellowship Rwanda, Byumba Diocese
of the Anglican Church of Rwanda and Duhumurizanye Iwacu Rwanda – is
responsible for the implementation of the program. The program is funded by the
Royal Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Participatory Action Research
(PAR) forms an integral part of the intervention. For the implementation of
this intensive monitoring and evaluation system, the consortium partners are
looking for a full-time Senior Researcher who will be based in Kigali and
coordinates the team of Participatory Action Researchers that work in four
provinces in Rwanda.
Basic
responsibilities
<
>Coordinate the team of Participatory Action Researchers in conjunction with
the Program Manager;Be actively involved in the monitoring and evaluation of
the CBSP at grassroots level and review the progress, successes and challenges
from an internal angle;Provide input in the conceptualization, design and
implementation of Participatory Action Research, including the adaptation and
development of research and Monitoring and Evaluation methods;Develop a
data-analysis plan for the qualitative and quantitative data collected by the
Participatory Action Researchers;Coordinate the process of writing reports on
the research findings which can be presented and discussed at the internal
level;
  • Coordinate
    and contribute to co-authored (academic) articles, working papers, book
    chapters, significant change story booklets and other publications;
  • Be
    actively involved in the writing of the semi-annual report and final
    evaluation;
  • Contribute
    to the preparation of CBSP’s public communication strategies, like the
    website, news articles and leaflets;
  • Assist
    in the design and implementation of the (inter)national
    ‘linking-and-learning’ angle of the program;
  • Work
    with local partners and communities to foster a culture of knowledge
    sharing and learning among the staff and partners of the program.
Profile
candidate
Essential
skills and qualification
  • A
    Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Education, Anthropology, Public
    Health, Development Studies, Psychology or other related fields;
  • Experience
    with the application of both qualitative and quantitative research
    methods;
  • Experience
    with qualitative research methods like focus group discussions, in-depth
    semi-structured interviews and life histories;
  • Previous
    experience with Monitoring and Evaluation strategies within a psychosocial
    intervention program;
  • Experience
    in doing action research, analysis of research-data and/or practical
    experience in knowledge management within a nonprofit organization;
  • Experience
    with using research for achieving development outcomes in complex
    projects;
  • Proven
    analytical and technical skills and strong knowledge in research design
    and facilitation;
  • Having
    been the first author of at least one peer reviewed article;
  • Familiar
    with state of the art computer programs and other software like SPSS or
    excel for data capture, storage, retrieval and data-analysis;
  • Both
    strong Kinyarwanda and English language proficiency and excellent report
    writing and presentation skills;
  • Excellent
    interpersonal and networking skills;
  • Ability
    to manage heavy workloads, to multitask and to meet deadlines;
  • Ability
    to remain constantly aware of the balance between objectivity and
    subjectivity;
  • Commitment
    to the goals and principles of the community based sociotherapy program
    and an ability to ensure the mandate underpins our support to participants
    in the program;
  • A
    very sociable person, with strong communication skills and a
    non-discriminatory attitude.
Desirable
skills and qualifications
  • A
    (nearly completed) PhD Degree in Social Sciences, Education, Anthropology,
    Public Health, Development Studies, Psychology or other related field.
  • Experience
    in doing Participatory Action Research;
  • Being
    familiar with the community based sociotherapy intervention;
  • Experience
    with developing valid quantitative questionnaires and regression analyses
    to measure output of a complex social intervention and with analysis of
    qualitative research findings;
  • Working
    knowledge of French is considered a plus.
Terms
of employment
This
is a full-time position. The Senior Researcher will be based in the Head Office
in Kigali, but the position involves regular field-visits to areas where the
program is being implemented. The Senior Researcher is expected to start on the
1st of June 2016.
