BBOXX’s portfolio of more than 20,000 clients in rural Africa to spot

Specification
We’re looking for
intellectually curious, analytical, data-driven people who care about making a
difference. You will need to be part detective—who can investigate
problems to figure out what is really going wrong; part data scientist—who
can develop models and crunch numbers; and part M&E specialist—who is
focused on measuring impact. Good candidates will:
- Care
deeply about the problems BBOXX is trying to solve.
If you don’t have a passion for renewable energy or development, this job
probably isn’t for you. - Possess
a university degree from a top-tier university or at least 2-years work
experience in a quantitative field. Ideally your
degree is in a quantitative field like statistics, engineering,
mathematics, or science. - Have
an insatiable drive to learn and produce new insight.
“Intellectual curiosity” is a term that often gets bandied about, but we
really mean it. Why would a solar client ever choose to go back to
using kerosene? If I gave you a list of 1,000 villagers in rural
Kenya, which ones would be likely to default in the next 6 months?
Are our calls to clients actually
encouraging them to make their payments? You’re always asking
questions, and you could happily spend hours combing through data looking
for answers to those questions, even without being asked to do so.
If research, analysis, and producing new knowledge don’t excite you, this
is not the job for you. - Have
prior work experience in finance, research, banking, M&E.
At minimum you need to have experience analyzing large datasets and
producing models, but the ideal candidate will also bring outside
expertise specifically related to credit risk management and portfolio
analysis. Operational experience and knowledge of how to actually
manage credit risk in such a setting is a plus. - Be
willing to work in rural areas of Africa.
This job isn’t only a data junkie – you’ll also need to be comfortable
with qualitative research, which will mean interviewing clients in rural
areas, and developing novel methods for improving our understanding of
clients and evaluating potential operational improvements (similar to
Ideo’s design methods). As such you may need to spend 15-20% of your
time in rural areas. Our staff have been known to sleep at clients’
homes to better understand how they use our products (you won’t have to do
that, but you may find you want to!) - Take
a methodical approach to solving problems.
You don’t go with your gut the moment you spot a problem, but first take
the time to gather and analyze evidence to understand the problem.
You are comfortable with both deductive (constructing the big picture from
disparate pieces of evidence) and analytical (breaking a problem down into
its component parts) reasoning. - Pay
persistent attention to detail. You need to have
a keen sense for when something just isn’t right. If there are
inconsistencies or logical problems with data, they jump out at you, and
you focus on identifying and fixing them. Anything less would keep
you awake at night. - Be
proficient in a range of data analysis tools.
Excel is a minimum: we would also expect you to be familiar with
statistical tools like SPSS and Python.
