Terms of Reference for a Research

  1. Background
Never Again Rwanda (NAR) is a human
rights and peace-building organization that was founded in response to the 1994
genocide perpetrated against Tutsis. Guided by a vision of a nation where
citizens are agents of positive change and work together towards sustainabl

e
peace and development, NAR aims to empower Rwandans with opportunities to
become active citizens through peace-building and development. NAR’s mission is
to enhance citizens’ capacity to analyze the root causes of conflict and
facilitate dialogue among peers in order to generate ideas and activities that
work towards sustainable peace and socio-economic development.

NAR has 4 core programmes including:

    Lakes Peacebuilding Programme
As far as research is concerned, NAR, through
a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, engages citizens and other
relevant stakeholders in a constant exercise of identifying and analyzing major
challenges to peace and eventually propose possible solutions to address them.
Research is therefore vital in NAR work as it enables the organisation to
engage with policy-makers on the basis of evidence-based
material.   
In a bid to strengthen its research
team, NAR seeks to recruit an experienced research fellow.  
  1. Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the
Research Coordinator, the Research Fellow has the following
responsibilities; 
  • Participate
    in drafting research concept notes;
  • Conduct
    literature reviews;
  • Participate
    in designing research methodologies and tools;
  • Participate
    in data collection exercise;
  • Participate
    in analyzing and interpreting research data;
  • Produce
    timely research reports;
  • Participate
    in the presentation of  research findings and co-organize the
    validation workshops;
  • Participate
    in the dissemination of research findings through various channels
    including workshops, policy briefs, newspapers articles, articles in peer
    reviewed journals, radio/TV programs, etc.
  • Provide
    inputs on the planning and implementation of the NAR programs and ensure
    efficient use of participatory action research as a key organizational
    approach;
  • Participate
    in the advocacy processes;
  • Supervise
    interns and volunteers
  • Participate
    in the NAR and partner meetings as assigned by the Country Director, or
    other competent members;
  1.  Minimum
    qualifications and skills
  • A
    Master’s or a high level  Degree in social sciences (sociology,
    clinical psychology, political science, international relations, peace
    studies, development studies, communication, journalism, law, social work,
    education) from an accredited university;
  • At
    least 3 year experience in a research position in a recognized
    institution;
  • Proven
    experience in applying quantitative and qualitative research methods; Good
    command of English and Kinyarwanda ;
  • Good
    command of French is an asset;
  • Strong
    oral  communication skills;
  • Strong
    analytical and writing skills
  • Good
    command of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Good
    command of quantitative and qualitative data analysis software (e.g. SPSS,
    STATA, NVIVO, CS PRO, etc.) is an asset;
  • Experience
    in writing newspaper  articles and policy briefs is an asset;
  • Experience
    in writing scientific journal articles is an asset;
  • Good
    understanding of the sociopolitical context of  Rwanda, and the Great
    Lakes Region at large;
  • Self-initiative
    to carry out assigned tasks at a professional level and largely without
    supervision;
  1. Conditions
    and Remuneration
The successful candidate will be based
at NAR’s Headquarters in Kigali, but will be often travelling upcountry. 
NAR provides attractive remuneration package commensurate with the staff’s
experience in the field and his/her performance.
