Background
to the Guy S. Goodwin-Gill Scholarship
Professor Guy S.
Goodwin Gill has been a firm supporter of the Refugee Law Initiative since its
inception, and his treatise The
Refugee in International Law is a core textbook on the MA in
Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies. Professor Goodwin-Gill has
written extensively on refugee protection as an academic at All Souls College,
Oxford, and as a practitioner who served as Legal Adviser in the Office of
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from 1976-1988.
The University of
London created the scholarship on the occasion of Professor Goodwin-Gill’s
retirement in 2015 to celebrate his lifelong contribution to international
refugee law and to recognise his close connection with the Refugee Law
Initiative. The scholarship promotes the study of refugee protection by
outstanding students who are limited by financial circumstances, especially
those from and living in low- or middle- income countries.
