Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), is an international
non-profit research organization. Based in New Haven, CT, with offices in
Washington, D.C. and worldwide, IPA works with development partners and
academic researchers to create and evaluate approaches to solving development
problems, to communicate “what works” in development and
to scale up successful projects in a variety of fields, including health,
education, microfinance, governance and agriculture.

Project Description:

CBEHPP

The CBEHPPLab Technician will play a critical role in conducting
our impact evaluation of the Community Based Environmental Health Promotion
Programme (CBEHPP). CBEHPP seeks
to improve health through
education and community participation by training local community members to
lead weekly health club meetings. These meetings are designed to educate
participants about safe hygiene, sanitation, and other health behaviors.
Innovations for Poverty Action is currently preparing for the endline
evaluation of this programme, with endline data collection to begin in
September 2015, and the Lab Technician will begin in September2015 in order to
receive training. The study which the Lab Technician will support includes more
than 9,000 households in 150 villages and will generate evidence about the
health and economic impacts of health clubs on households, with a focus on the
impact on children age 5 and under. Our findings will help to inform the work
of the Ministry of Health and that of our implementing partner in their current
and future programs.

Position Summary:  

TheLab Technicianposition provides an excellent opportunity to
gain hands
on experience in a field settingundertaking cuttingedge
development research. The Lab Technicianwill be a critical part of this work
managing the testing of water samples taken from homes.  The results of
these tests are a key outcome of the study and so the Lab Technician must give
the upmost care and attention to the reliability of his/her results.  The
duties for this work include, but are not limited to:

·        
Sterilize all relevant equipment for the mobile laboratory and
for collection of water samples in the field

·        
Prepare culture medium for conducting water sample tests

·        
Detect termotolerant coliforms (TTC) using the membrane filter
technique

·        
Use and maintain a DelAgua portable testing kit for said testing

·        
Train field staff on correct practices for collecting household
water samples

·        
Maintain clear and accurate logs of testing results

·        
Inform Research Associate of any unusual or suspicious results

·        
Enter the lab results data in excel sheets

Qualifications:

A successful Lab Technicianis detail-oriented and has excellent
organizational skills and will be committed to our high standards of data
quality. The position requires an exceptional attention to detail due to the
critical nature of the Lab Technician’s results.  As part of this, the Lab
Technician must demonstrate the ability to conduct repetitive and monotonous tests
at a consistently high level. In addition, the following skills and experiences
are required:

Holding an advanced diploma preferably in environmental health
sciences

·        
Computer literacy required

·        
Data entry experience required

·        
More than 6 months paid experience conducting tests to detect
TTC

·        
More than 6 months paid experience sterilizing equipment and
preparing culture medium

·        
Previous experience using and maintaining a mobile testing lab

·        
Previous experience training individual on collecting household
water samples

·        
Willingness to work long hours in order to complete
time-sensitive tests

·        
Previous experience working as part of a team

·        
Commitment to personal and professional ethics

·        
Details oriented

·        
Exceptional attention to detail even when conducting repetitive
and monotonous tasks

·        
Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and work
effectively on a team
and meet the deadlines

·        
Ability to live and work in Rusizi District
