NI NYAMPINGA RADIO
PRODUCER TERMS OF REFERENCE
DURATION : 12 MONTHS
Girl Hub is a
strategic collaboration between DFID and the Nike Foundation. We are a catalyst
to unleash the girl effect at scale, stopping poverty before it reaches the
next generation. We have started Girl Hubs in Rwanda, Nigeria and Ethiopia, and
we are also co-located with DFID in London. In November 2011 we launched Ni
Nyampinga, a youth brand aimed at inspiring and enabling adolescent girls in
Rwanda. Its mission is to reframe and reposition the value of girls by creating
a dynamic teen culture, and positive collective identity for girls. Ni
Nyampinga is built on girl insight and cultural relevance.
WHAT IS NI
NYAMPINGA ?
Ni Nyampinga is
Rwanda’s first youth brand, aimed at inspiring and enabling Rwandan girls to be
future leaders. The purpose of the NN brand and its unique entry point, is as a
‘friend’ to girls through the journey of adolescence”. Launched by Girl Hub
Rwanda in 2011, Ni Nyampinga currently consists of a quarterly magazine and
thrice weekly radio show that is by girls for girls and reaches a national audience.
The content is designed to inspire and instil self-belief as well as provide
practical and enabling information that can be used every day in girl’s lives.
Most importantly Ni Nyampinga acts a much-needed friend to girls as they learn,
explore and grow through adolescence.
THE ROLE
The Ni Nyampinga
Radio Producer is responsible for inspiring and training young women to be
professional journalists, and coordinating the production of Rwanda’s first
teen youth radio platform, as part of an integrated editorial team producing
multimedia content for radio, magazine and mobile. The brand is unique as it’s
created by girls and for girls. You will ensure our branded products provide
the definitive coverage of issues facing girls in Rwanda today, be their voice
in current issues that affect them, and align the content with the
organization’s strategy and vision, while developing and directing young women
journalists to produce NN radio shows.
You’ll be working
closely with the Managing Editor and the Editorial Trainer to manage, brief and
co-ordinate the team to collect and write stories for the platform, focusing on
the quality and impact of NN radio output. You must be able to work and meet
tight editorial deadlines, pay attention to details, accuracy, and creativity
and production value.
The ability to
lead and keep the journalists motivated to produce innovative, creative and
original work through what are sometimes unpredictable and fast developing
circumstances is crucial. As is being collaborative with this new and
passionate team of journalists on the ground in Rwanda, who are united in their
vision to catalyze the country’s greatest untapped resource : girls – this
is a chance to play a key role in developing the next generation of Rwandan
journalists to empower girls and catalyze change.
KEY SKILLS AND
QUALITIES :
  • Media-trained
  • Radio Journalism experience and the ability to teach world class
    radio production to young women with no previous knowledge – including
    (and ensuring) professionalism, quality of work, being ethical, meeting
    deadlines, developing lasting skills
  • Excellent radio script writing and editing
  • Excellent field and live production
  • Excellent audio editing
  • Experience in production of radio magazine with multi formats –
    especially in youth focused / Magazine – editorial style programming
  • Experience in working in a multimedia newsroom
  • Be able to deliver well edited radio shows in tight deadlines
  • Experience of creating editorial calendars and schedules
  • Excellent spoken and written Kinyarwanda and English
  • Knowledge of Rwandan culture
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in leading groups and coordinating programmes with
    broadcast partners ?
  • Experience building in building in audience feedback and
    participation through mobile, live broadcasts etc
  • Experience in Production of radio shows targeting young people is
    an asset
  • Team work spirit is an asset
KEY DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Radio training of a team of NN journalists who have little or no
    prior journalism experience, editing included.
  • Ensure the journalists meet their editorial deadlines and delivery
    requirements.
  • Work closely with the NN Production manager and adhere to NN
    Production schedule
  • Ensure the journalists comply to ethical standards of content
    gathering.
  • Coordinate activities involving or related to the Ni Nyampinga
    Journalists with the Editorial trainer and Brand Team Coordinator.
  • Go to field work everywhere, including rural remote areas while
    coaching/training and coordinating young women journalists.
  • Edit first radio scripts drafts in Kinyarwanda. – ensure scripts
    are shared with Brand team for approval
  • Coordinate the editing and recording of audio NN show by NN
    journalists and do final editing.
  • Work with the Managing Editor and Editorial Trainer to coordinate
    the content strategy objectives, briefing girl journalists for events and
    skill building training.
  • Ensuring the editorial quality of Ni Nyampinga radio reflects a
    Rwandan girl tone and adheres to our brand guidelines and is of high
    production quality
  • Work with the Managing Editor and Editorial Trainer to plan content
    across platforms.
  • Setting up contracts with radio stations involved in airing NN
    radio.
  • Ensure NN radio shows are delivered at the radio stations on time
    in order to be aired.
  • Financial management of project expenses with the Finance team, as
    well as the management of the assets required by journalists in field.
  • Attend and participate in weekly editorial meetings newsroom
    activities.
  • Look to inspire and innovate in programming by staying on top of
    local and international trends in radio and sharing back with editorial
    team
  • Take part in quarterly strategic briefings and work with managing
    editor to develop strategic responses/to these briefs. Pitch ideas to NN
    Brand team
  • Incorporate mobile feedback
  • Generate reports detailing weekly radio activity
