The Hamilton
Conservation Authority is currently seeking a Terrestrial Ecology Intern for a
24-week position during the 2015 field season. The intern will work
closely with Hamilton Conservation Authority Terrestrial Ecologist and will be
involved in a variety of ecological surveys and monitoring programs.
TASKS AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establish
ten Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network (EMAN) Plots throughout the
Hamilton Conservation Authorities watershed, with guidance from the terrestrial
ecologist;
Conduct
vegetation surveys within Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network Plots
including flora identification and tree health;
Develop
and implement a field program to survey for and confirm presence/absence of
Species at Risk;
Conduct
vegetation surveys, following the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources’
Ecological Land Classification (ELC) protocols. This will be completed
under the guidance of qualified field staff;
Undertake
landowner contact in preparation for survey work if necessary;
Hold
a degree or diploma in ecology, biology, environmental Sciences or related
subjects;
Possess,
and able to enhance the following skills:
Field
botany and zoology, including plant and animal identification and survey
techniques;
Be
familiar with the flora and fauna of southern Ontario; ability to identify
birds by sight and sound would be an asset;
Knowledge
of and experience with Ecological Land Classification protocols;
Knowledge
and experience with a variety of monitoring programs (i.e. Ecological
Monitoring and Assessment Network or Vegetation Sampling Protocol, Marsh
Monitoring Program and Forest Bird Monitoring Program);
Mapping,
the use of GPS receivers, and air photo interpretation;
Knowledge
of and experience with the process of landowner contact.
Possess
knowledge and be able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, GIS software and
Power Point.
Able
to work independently;
Ability
to work in an outdoor environment in rough terrain, regularly walking all day;
Have
a valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle;
position is funded through the federal government’s Science Horizons Youth
Internship Program. This funding program has specific placement requirements
that must be met by the prospective intern. This includes being younger than 30
years of age, unemployed, a graduate of a relevant university or college
program, be a Canadian Citizen, has permanent Canadian residency status, or has
been granted refugee status in Canada and is legally entitled to work in
Canada, have not participated in a federally funded internship program in the
past (Science Horizons or any Youth Employment Strategy (YES) Career Focus
program).
The intern will work
from the main HCA office, Woodend in Ancaster. Working hours will be 7.5 hours
daily, 5 days per week. Some weekend or evening work may be required
during field season.
SALARY AND
TERM: This position will pay $15.00 per hour for a 37.5 hour workweek for
24 weeks. Start date is May 25, 2015.
