from experienced, qualified persons for the position of Ecological
Technician.

The Ecological Technician reports to the Supervisor, Watershed Biology
within the Watershed Management Department. The Ecological Technician
is responsible for the collection, analysis, assessment, reporting and
maintenance of ecological information and will maintain a
comprehensive understanding of the watershed ecosystem and natural
heritage features at a landscape scale.

The Ecological Technician will make a substantial contribution to the
planning and regulations processes of the Authority by providing
ecological advice to the planning and permit review of development
applications as they relate to natural heritage features of the
watershed under the Development, Interference with Wetland and
Alterations to Shorelines and Watercourses Ontario Regulation 155/06
and the Planning Act.

This position will work with internal and external clients to
maintain, enhance, protect and conserve biological diversity and
integrity of watershed resources.

The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications:
• Natural science Diploma in natural resources management discipline
(e.g. Ecosystem Management, Fish and Wildlife, Natural Environment
Conservation).
• Specialized post-graduate certifications (e.g. Environmental
Management, Ecosystem Restoration) are also beneficial.
• Four years’ experience directly related to critical skills including
field work, policy interpretation and implementation, report writing,
customer service, communication skills, and scientific data
collection, all within the ecological field.
• Knowledge of Conservation Authorities Act, Niagara Region
Environmental Policy, Planning Act, Species at Risk Act, Drainage Act
and the Greenbelt Act as it relates to development review.
• Applied knowledge of project construction implementation and
sequencing, engineering techniques, planning processes and technical
drawing interpretation.
• Expert identification of flora and fauna and their habitat.
• Expert identification of Species at Risk and their habitat.
• Ecological Land Classification Certification (or experience and
ability to obtain)
• Southern Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (or experience and
ability to obtain)
• Experience delineating and assessing the ecological value of natural
heritage features and providing advice in a municipal planning
context.
• Experience with restoration techniques, mitigation measures and
creative solutions to reduce environmental impacts of development
projects.
• Experience scoping and reviewing Environmental Impact Studies an asset.
• Proficiency and experience with word processing (MS Word),
spreadsheets (MS Excel), presentation (MS PowerPoint), database.
Familiarity with ArcGIS and AutoCAD is an asset.
• A demonstrated ability to monitor and work within approved financial budgets.
• Committed to customer service excellence, with a firm knowledge of
best practices in the municipal planning field.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, investigative,
problem-solving, report-writing, communication, presentation, and
public speaking skills.
• Possess a valid “G” Driver’s License for the Province of Ontario. A
Clean Driver’s Abstract is required.
• Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, over
rough terrain.

Salary Range: Bargaining Unit Position (35 hours/week)

Grade 5 – $56,629 – $66,622 – Under review
