About the

This opportunity is
for an Live
Voice Closed Captionist
  on an On-call basis
in Oakville.

This role in
a Nutshell

The Live Voice
Captionist uses voice recognition technologies to create broadcast-quality closed
captioning. As a voice captionist, you will develop your enunciation skills and
train the software to understand and correctly interpret your voice while
producing accurate live, real-time captions that meet CRTC and TWN
requirements. This requires you to simultaneously re-speak what you hear in a
way that the system can reproduce accurately.

In order to develop
your own knowledge of what you will hear and re-speak, you will spend time
researching weather, traffic and environmental topics. This could include
reading about current events, verifying the correct spellings of names, cities,
towns and streets. When you are not captioning on air or preparing to do so,
you will perform off-line captioning duties.

A day in the
life of a Live Voice Closed Captionist:

  • You
will be responsible for the on-line captioning of all TWN programming.
This is accomplished by re-speaking everything, including studio talent,
live reporters, guests, stories and features into a Dragon based software
    system called Procap.
  • Achieve
and maintain accuracy and delay time standards set out by the CRTC and The
    Weather Network.
  • Update
user profiles daily, and build a library of words to increase accuracy and
    minimize delay.
  • Use
MacCaption or CaptionMaker software to perform the offline captioning of
various TWN elements. This may also include captioning for the web, mobile
    and smart TV’s.
  • Use
Final Cut Pro and Compressor to combine the video and Closed Caption File.

You:

  • High
    School and/or College diploma
  • Television
production, communications, captioning or court reporting experience
  • Knowledge
of Dragon, Procap, MacCaption or CaptionMaker an asset
  • Experience
using Final Cut Pro editing software

It’s not
just your voice we’re after!

  • An
interest in providing captioning for weather related programing to
millions of closed captioning users, more specifically the hearing
    impaired community.
  • Effective
communication skills, specifically the ability to read, write and speak
    English with native proficiency.
  • A clear
speaking voice and excellent enunciation skills.
  • Good
    listening skills.
  • The
ability to make quick judgments and work under deadlines.

    according to broadcast schedules.
