Mennonite Economic
Development Associates of Canada (MEDA) invites applications for the senior
post of Field Project Manager (FPM) for a large scale, long term women’s
economic development project in Burma as described below. Conditional upon MEDA
signing a contract for recently awarded funding, the successful FPM candidate
will ideally assume duties in June 2015.

Field
Project Manager, Burma (2 year contract, renewable up to 5 years)

Leading a team of
field staff and HQ specialists, the FPM ensures effective implementation of
project strategies, adjusting course as needed based on interim performance to
achieve life-of-project performance targets. Responsibilities include: * acting
as MEDA’s representative in Burma; * relationship management with the
Government of Burma, donor agencies, the business community, and project
implementation partnerships; * field staff recruitment, management and
performance evaluation; * contracting service providers; * financial management
and general administration; * project performance tracking M&E/MIS systems;
and * security management. The FPM also assists MEDA to cultivate new business
development opportunities in-country and regionally. The duty station for this
position is likely to be Yangon and involves frequent travel country-wide. The
FPM will report to and work closely with MEDA’s North America-based Senior
Project Manager tasked to supervise this Project.

Qualifications

  • · A
    minimum of ten years’ experience leading and managing complex, large scale
    economic development initiatives in an international context.
  • ·
    University degree (ideally Master’s) in business, international
    development, economic development or related field.
  • ·
    Proven experience in women’s economic empowerment programming in a development
    context.
  • ·
    Strong understanding of competitive market environments; inclusive
    subsector development and value chain development facilitation methods.
  • ·
    Demonstrated ability to mobilize stakeholders into partnerships and
    alliances, lead and facilitate collaborative processes.
  • ·
    Strong understanding of marketing, business planning, business growth
    advisory service or related areas.
  • ·
    Sector experience in agriculture/agribusiness is desirable.
  • ·
    Fluency in English is required.
  • · Prior
    work experience in Burma or Southeast Asia is desirable.
  • ·
    Appreciation and support of MEDA’s faith, values, mission and purpose.

Quick Facts

The project will
support 25,000 women in the Burmese ethnic states of Shan and Karen grasp the
opportunities offered by the changing environment and become active, respected
and empowered economic actors and leaders. Over 5 years, the project will work
primarily within agricultural markets where women are active participants.
Early field research indicated that strawberries, rice and horticultural
products (vegetable gardens) would be appropriate target value chains. In-depth
research at the inception mission will confirm and deepen this analyses. The
ultimate outcomes are to improve women’s incomes and agricultural productivity
and increase the number of women assuming leadership roles as economic actors
in their communities. The project also wil facilitate and strengthen the
provision of goods and services to women small scale producers by Burmese
public and private sector actors, thereby improving the enabling environment
within which these producers operate. Finally, the project will improve the
standard of living and the business environment for at least 125,000 indirect clients
who will directly benefit from women small producer’s improved incomes
(household) or enhanced goods and services provided by stronger MSMEs.
